Thornton Dale is a lovely place. Must make the effort to visit again some day.

Thortnon-le-dale is very picturesque but also has the additional interest for me of Matthewsons which have about 9 classic car sales in a year as well as all sorts of intereesting memorabilia. Next one December 9th and no surprises where the whatsthisthen? came from.

Not a Subaru though, and maybe not everyone's picture of a "classic"

Back on the Bristol, there's something rather disturbing to see one with square headlights.
Four round headlights always did look good.

Back to our little puzzler....
Just a further clue to make it a little easier, particularly if you remember a former QPR goalkeeper's endorsement in the 1970's, if this useful kit bag was on the back seat it would be quite appropriate :-D

The gear lever one reminds me of a Colt (Mitsubishi) model that passed through my hands back in the eighties, can't remember the detail and I only ever had one.

It's got either a hi-low range or 2wd-4wd lever as well, so it's got ideas of some form of offroading ?

From what I have read about it the original was a pioneer of the class rather than a follower.

One more clue as a memory jogger for those with a good eye, a decent knowledge of adverts, and a bit of elementary deduction :-D

and for the viewer a little nostalgic treat featuring Ford Escorts in the Manx Rally in 1975

Lets look at the evidence....

The bright upholstery (the tyre in the back for the observant)
The pair of knobs
The kit bag and the QPR footballer
One of Britains Best Rally Drivers, and his Escort
A pioneer of what has become a very popular genre

What more is needed? Well for those of you who don't quite follow my advert drift here's a traditional light cluster shot

Still clueless Neil. I know nothing of any of the above,
Seen two gear knobs in an old Land Rover - that would be about 55 years ago though.
See two knobs regularly, I have to work with them but fail to see the connection here.
Football, rally drivers? Pass.
Only one I know of is Erik Carlsson. (Carlsson på taket) :(

Led astray by the posh seats but I suppose it could be a Jeep.

Sorry Steve when you know the answer and have an affliction like me of remembering the garbage churned out in old adverts, you dont associate Roger Clark the Rally Driver with his exploits behind the wheel of an escort, but more the adverts he used to do for the product emblazoned all over his rally car.

One of the "facts" on the wiki page claims the "The new UK whatsthisthen? featured a new Rover-designed grille and other body kit items, and gained soft nudge-bars at the front in deference to public opinion against bullbars."

Not a Jeep Gibbo, but right sort of "thing"
