Think the Steering rack is weeping

Unread post by KennyW »

Hi All,

It looks like my rack as got the dread death knell with fluid found lying underneath the car yesterday.

Thoughts from members who have changed rack.

Find updated 2nd hand rack
or
refurbish original rack.

Just don't have the cash for new one from citroen.

Hi Kenny, not sure how you are with tools, spanners and the like. But I replaced mine about a month ago and it took me about 4½ hours.
Have a look at the two posts below as they may help you, especially the instructions created by Bobbins.
I got my rack from a place in Chester who chrome plate the shaft where the seal runs, they also give 3 years warranty, my rack is a little stiff, but getting easier. Still not decided whether to get another under warranty or see how it goes.

Perhaps you have upset it  It looks as though its about to upset you. Its not a rubber boot leaking is it?

I try not to upset it Peter I even did my filter changes and gave it good drink of new oil to lub its engine.

Thanks Stu , Bobbins did post a reply in this thread but with the crash it has disappeared. He mentioned your chrome treated rack and I thank you for posting that. I will make enquiries. I have organised some days off at the end of the month to do the job. I haven't thrown away my spanners etc and have done a Xantia rack before, focus rack etc.

Kenny - if you're up for it and you have a camera, could you take a few photos as you go along so you can put together a little 'How To' for the how-to section of the forum. You can use all / some / none of my notes from my previous posting about what to do and how to do it to accompany the photos if you want. I think the subject of "How to replace my C5 X7 steering rack" might be a recurring one

Well checked the rack and it's NOT leaking dry as a bone, possible oil leak not 100% sure or maybe a cracked pipe on the oil filler.

Need to get car on a ramp to investigate further.

If it's the same as my X7 (mine is also a Tourer) it's £130.00.

Always looking at market Kenny. I note the issues and the tighter seats and cabin space. They are also a bit posh to wack all my gear in for the outdoors life
Thanks Paul R for road tax figure. Not bad that £130!

I thought you meant it was fitted with cast iron radiators for a minute - now that would be posh 8-)
