What 40 year old French cars to have ?

Post by bobins »

With the MOT regulations changing from May next year to increase the MOT age limit exemption from pre-1960 cars to a rolling 40 year exemption, what nice French cars will this allow to be driven both MOT and road fund licence expempt ? What would you get ? :)
A bit of explanation - From May next year the DfT will allow pre-1978 cars to be driven on the road without MOT or tax, though Construction & Use and Lighting regs will still apply. In 2019 it will allow pre-1979 cars etc, etc. Owners can still submit their cars for a 'voluntary' MOT if they wish.

Well this is French and its 1978 vintage, but not a car, and I wouldn't like so totally irrelevant to the questions you pose!

There's a good reason we never see those running around - no one would willingly be seen in one :rofl2:

and quite a desirable French car again 1978 vintage, but strange sort of front seat arrangement, and the tartan...got to be a bit marmite-ey...

Those Bagheera's came with an 'owners restriction' when they sold them. That promo photo actually constituted a condition of sale. You had to look and dress like the chap in the photo before they would let you drive it away - hence, you don't see many of them around these days

Wish I'd kept my first R5 now... A car free of tax and especially MOT would be perfect for me given my issues with MOT tests...

I may now look for something pre '78....

I wonder how the insurance companies will deal with the MOT exemption ? Presumably they'll only offer scrap value in the event of your car being damaged unless you can show a current MOT ? Maybe if you pay for your own engineer's report they may up their offer ?

Early CXs and GSs will fall into the MOT exemption next year - wonder if their prices will creep up a little ?

For the German speakers amongst us here is a spotters guide to the Renault Range in 1978, should FCF members wish to select a Renault as their 40 year old car to have in 2018 when the regs change!

From the pics here

I think I would go for the Yellow Renault 4.

Mehari, Jim?
Maybe a tad bike-insecure and breezy for the UK, though.

We'll have to wait a few more years before the Fuegos (Fuegii ?) become exempt - and they might have all dissolved by then. If you can believe 'Howmanyleft', then there are less than 25 Fuegos road legal in the UK. Wonder how many rolls of gaffer tape it would need to hold a Fuego together long enough to get it to drive down the road ?

I used to have a Renault 20TS - it was lovely whilst it lasted, so I think I'd have to have another one of them. Realistically less than 20 of them road legal these days :(

Does this 78 vintage French model look better from the side and the back than from the front?

Wouldn't say no.

front
side

back
