Scrolling

Post by elma »

The forum has recently changed slightly so that the longer signatures scroll rather than taking up lots of screen space.
This is a welcome change but I cannot scroll the pages anymore with my touchpad or mouse wheel.
The page will scroll down until I get to the first long signature, it will then scroll to the bottom of the signature and stop dead.
Any chance of either making the scrolling ignore the signatures or moving back to scrolling the page once the end of the signature is reached please?

If you scroll while your mouse or pointer is outside the scroll box, then the whole page scroll should still work.

I that is not the case, then give details of the browser version that you are using.

I'm finding this change a bit awkward on my phone too - iOS originally (years ago) required two fingered swipes to scroll the contents of scrollable text areas, and a single finger to scroll the page, however that got changed to single finger for both both a few years back. So now when I try to scroll the page its hit and miss whether I hit a scrollable signature and only scroll the signature or scroll the page.

That does work Mike but it's damn annoying.
Weirdly the trackpad is now scrolling straight past the signatures unless I actually put the pointer inside them and choose to scroll.
The mouse wheel is still getting caught up.
I use Safari on Osx.

Can't you just chop the signatures short?
The 6 lines displayed without scrolling is plenty and you did request that members limited the signature length.

I must admit that I find it mildly annoying to scroll down and then stop while the signature contents scroll. I can certainly live with it - it's just a nuisance to judder to a halt if the cursor happens to not be outside the area that the signature box wipes.

Is it an either or choice ? Just curious what prompted the change to scrolling in the first place. There are a few signatures that are big but not many that I would call excessive, especially in relation to some other forums.

Also the scroll box is a bit odd - I notice with my own signature that even though half of my signature is not visible unless scrolled, there is a large blank area under the scroll box but still within my post that would have accommodated the remainder of the signature without scrolling anyway. Perhaps if the scroll box was larger most signatures would not need to scroll and only those few very large ones would present a scroll bar.

The change is so the forum is more readable on mobile screens, hence Mike's prior request to limit signature length.

The space under the signature is to allow the "back-to-top" icon not to collide with the signature. I have always thought that icon a little pointless.

My 2 cents worth - I must say I prefer it how it was:
Limit signature to 4 lines / 30 words as per AUP update already made.
Revert Avatar section to allow past / present cars list to fit (whether separate field for previous cars or not - as long as there is room)
Get rid of the annoying scroll bars - or at least the one in the signature which shouldn't really be needed if people are complying with the 4 lines / 30 words.

As I've already mentioned - in portrait mode on my mobile, the avatar section is not shown anyway (it is in landscape orientation) so is not an issue.

I'm quite ambivalent about it.
Rarely read the sigs or car lists other than to confirm which car a member is discussing.
I do use the 'back to top' icon but it is so easy to use an alternative method it would not be missed.

I have made an interim adjustment that eliminates the dead space under the signature box by reducing the width of the signature box so that the other icons sit to the right of it. You will need to refresh your browser cache to see the effect.

I am still contemplating what to do with the scrolling.

I'd say revert to how it was.

Haven't noticed this on the PC, but it's royally irritating when browsing on my phone. Not a deal breaker, just annoying.

Behaviour here is that I have to drag outside the signature area to scroll the page (it appears to treat them essentially as different entities). Trying to scroll inside the signature will scroll that but not the surrounding page. Behaviour is identical in Chrome and Dolphi. Only difference is that Chrome shows a scrollbar for it, Dolphin doesn't.
