When I was a bus driver, most of our fleet at Stagecoach were automatics, and lurched about att over the place changing gears. There were a few manuals, and I far preferred them, even though some had obstructive gearchanges you could give a much smoother drive in them than the autos.

Your valuable opinions are sought on this NEWS FLASH!

It would be good if FCF members could dissect this and come to a view whether it's just normal trade-in discounting to revive flagging sales wrapped up in a headline grabbing news story, or maybe its Ford leading the way!

Aparrently Vauxhall and BMW have also launched "scrappage schemes" this year, (must have missed that), but Ford's is different...they are going to take any old diesel not just their own!

Ford, like the others, just want to sell more new vehicles. Maybe I missed it, but it looks as if they'd sell you a new diesel, if you wanted it. NOx is only part of the story. It's too much of an over-simplification to describe everything pre-Euro VI as 'dirty', especially after what we now know about recent emissions 'testing'.

No, the way forward to cleaner air doesn't lie in selling more ICE vehicles, but the manufacturers will try to boost sales of these in the years left. What they are offering will do little good in the big picture, but it is being dressed up as something else.
__________

Actually, Ford are something of experts on old and dirty engines, having produced a lengthy series of primitive and noxious petrol vehicles in the late 80s, 90s and even later. Lost count of the number of times the stench of (bad-eggs) hydrogen sulphide or acrid acidic fumes has suddenly come into the car, only to find yet another old Escort or Fiesta up front. All this at the same time that PSA were excelling with XU and XUD, the latter which only got better as it aged, unlike the Ford offerings which were heading in the opposite direction. No wonder they were eventually happy to have PSA engines made at Dagenham!

Many car manufacturers have taken worthwhile strides towards new, non-ICE power. Ford isn't one of them, so far as I recall, and my own view is that their current 'initiative' is just cynically profit-driven. They may not be alone in this, but it looks, to some of us, just shoddy.

The bad eggs smell actually comes from new cars with catalytic converters before they're run in.

Yes indeed, Ford were infamous for rubbish engines back along...

Today has been a very bad day so far for atmospheric pollution; it was particularly bad this morning riding my bike to work. The whole world seemed to reek of vehicle exhaust fumes, both diesel and petrol. Horrid...

Here it is very humid and muggy with not a breath of wind to blow anything away.

On that basis, I don't believe it was all 'old and dirty' vehicles making it so bad... I cannot recall seeing many vehicles over about 5 years and most were big and very recent SUVs as is the norm around these parts...

I don't believe modern diesels are any cleaner than the XUD of 25 years ago and I'll wager the XUD is cleaner overall... As I have said before, I'd love to see how an XUD stands up against the modern so-called 'clean' diesels...

According to the BBC website "The cars that can be traded in include any built to emissions standards that applied before 2010"
http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/business-41005208

It seems a little confusing, but Euro 5 emissions standard came in in September 2009. Does that mean that any car with a Euro 5 standard could be traded in ? It may well not be financially advantageous to trade in a Euro 5 car for £2k scrappage, but does the logic follow that any Euro 5 qualifies ?

I think that goes to the heart of the problem, Jim. The government should be putting all their efforts into outlawing still, calm days. That'd do a lot more for our pollution levels than any number of scrappage schemes :rofl2:

Yesterday while out in the van I saw another van who could do with changing their air filter. That was one very sooty mobile fog bank!

Seriously, rather than outlaw anything the Government should be working hard to reduce the need for so much travelling around and so much dependence upon road transport, both private and commercial...

Cutting emissions by reducing numbers of vehicles significantly rather than fiddling about with trying to lower the emissions from an ever growing number of vehicles would be far better. We are on an unsustainable path and sooner or later there's going to be a big implosion.

EVs I still don't think are the real answer; localisation most likely is by reducing the need to constantly move people and goods over massive distances...

Anyone on top of the scrappage schemes?

Everyone and their dog is offering them now, but I would say Ford extracted the biggest publicity, although their scheme is probably being trumped by the latercomers to the party.

Saw a notice outside a Skoda dealer for their "Scrappage" offer, so I assume that the phrase "Guaranteed Trade in" or "minimum trade in" has now disappeared from the Car Dealer vocabulary.

"Trade-in" has been replaced by "scrappage scheme" usually qualified with "up to" in most cases.

Not sure why scrappage has 2 p's the second one is a bit superfluous.

We certainly like to big ourselves up (last paragraph)
We....
will also move forward with the transition to cleaner technologies and electric
vehicles. [really?]Our new Automated and Electric Vehicles Bill will enable the UK to retain its
position as a global leader in the market for electric vehicles.
[/really?] This will allow the government to require the installation of charge points for electric vehicles at motorway
service areas and large fuel retailers, and to make it even easier to use electric vehicle
chargepoints across the UK. This drive towards cleaner technology and zero emission
transport will be reinforced by both the Clean Growth Plan and the Industrial Strategy,
including investment in science and innovation through the Industrial Strategy Challenge Fund
There should have been a litttle number like in wiki and a reference to where the BS comes from :-D

Regards Neil

PS I suppose in their defence they did use the more wishy washy phrase "a global leader" as opposed to "the global leader" and the UK does have a lot of cars.

Citation needed, indeed!

Apparently, one of the gummint was quoted in a newspaper that (in the context of tackling climate change) we're getting a "green brexit".
