how can i tell what fuel pump i have bosch or lucas.

Normally by looking at the pump and reading the name on the side/top.

where is the pump is it at the timing belt under the alternator.

I take it the your Xantia is a diesel, if so, the pump is the large aluminium object bolted on the front of it.
If you have a helper ask them to sit in the drivers seat and push down on the accelerator pedal whilst you look under the bonnet. You will see a lever moving, that lever is attatched to the pump.

On a Bosch pump the distributor head, which is the block at the end of the pump that the injector pipes are screwed into, is rectangular in shape, on the lucas it is round.
