c5 hdi wont start now P0340 No cam and crank sync

Unread post by darbuck »

Hi lads,
I know I have been posting a lot of new posts lately but as you know I am resurrecting the 2003 2.0 hdi c5, any way she has started to become very difficult to start I have changed both crank and cam sensors. she turns over fine kind of fires then cuts out, this is only when cold, she will fire eventually and runs really sweet when she does. any suggestions before the weather turns really bad. 8-[

Fuel rail pressure regulator/sensor springs to mind, but I don't know much about its function. Others will likely be able to expand on this.

Hi Sam,There are no fault's according to Lexia apart from p0110 which is MAF air temperature sensor and preheat resistor ghost code, that doesn't imply your wrong,
is there a definitive test for that regulator, I am wondering if anything else might cause this.Just one thing I noticed was injector one is -3.5 to -3.7 and injector four is +3.4ish and injectors 1 and 2 are (+/-) .2 and .3 respectively if that helps

As I noted, I'm not particularly clued up on the operation of the injection system. My understanding though is that a faulty fuel pressure regulator will not necessarily show up a fault code (I assume it needs to be diagnosed as faulty by another component before a fault code would register), just simply feed the ECU an incorrect measurement signal. I understand that Lexia can live-read the pressure regulator signal, and that this can be compared against a known correct value to determine whether or not the pressure regulator is at fault (or indeed whether the fuel pressure genuinely is too high/low).

Hi Sam thanks for replying, just to clarify so we are both on the same page, Is the sensor your talking about the one in the rail or the one that goes into the pump. Just one thought do you think the fact that the intake air temperature being read at 50C could cause this problem.

Ok lads I ran another lexia session and fuel rail pressure is as follows, ignition on engine off 0 bar, engine running 298 bar. Injector 1 went as low as -4.5 is this within limits.

I have had problems with the pressure regulator on the back of the HP pump, that can cause all sorts of problems and difficult starting is one of them, it has a fine stainless steel filter in it, you can't even see the holes, and it gets clogged. You should be able to get a secondhand one off ebay cheap enough.

Not sure if it'd make a huge difference but I would certainly not be happy with the IAT being read as 50c and I'd be inclined to change the maf for one with a working sensor or try a cold start with it unplugged just to see if it changes anything
