Has tried the supposed LED replacements for the DRL's

Post by KennyW »

Hi All,

Has anyone tried these and are they worth while. As one has blown on my x7 and need to replace same. Seen some on flea bay which appear to be Chinese in origin.

I used these first: (pic underneath)

Out of curiosity how long have these LED's lasted so far ? Dont think ive had any LED's of ebay that have lasted more than 3 months before they start flickering. Dont want to waste £22 on bulbs that last 3 months.

They are a bit crap but legal and I have had stupidly cheap LED sidelights in mine for three years now.
Have an LED luminary in my dark staircase permanently lit for three years too. Wired so it can't be turned off except at the consumer unit.
Both from eBay.

I've not had any issues with the DRL LEDs since fitting. I would say that these are not cheap and you are getting quality CREE LED chips. I've also just replaced the HP19W cornering lights with the same type. At over £45 per bulb for the standard replacements with a p*** poor light to boot, it's a no brainer for me.

Thanks for the replies Alasdair and Marc,
I was going to make my tool from a length of rod I have in the garage used for making a locking tool for the XUD flywheel. Will make sure I buy the Cree Led bulbs.
Marc have you done the conversion to LED's for the dip and headlights H1 and H7 bulbs?

I'm fairly sure that Marc's car already has the HID dipped headlamps and I think he's put two high lumen output halogen bulbs in for main beam.

Speaking generally, the LED replacement bulbs for dip and main are not recommended, or even legal, as the beam pattern would not then be correct. Further, the lumen output is not very high either.

Kenny / Paul
No chaps, I already have the factory-fitted Dual Function Xenons, so have no desire to change those - they are superb.

This is my new DRL LED which replaced the God awful HP24W dingy yellow bulb, but in the headlamp you can see my Xenon Headlamp Unit (unchanged)
New XBD 2 Cree.jpg
The headlamps are different to your Halogen models. I have one Large Side Light (1), (which I upgraded to a bright LED (W5W), then there is the Xenon Projector Lens (2) and that is it for headlamps. The only other lighting I have upgraded is the Cornering Lights (3), (HP19W) for the same LEDs that I used to upgrade the HP24W DRLs (4).
Xenon Headlamp.PNG
Here is a pic of the new cornering light looking at it from the driver's side to passenger side direction:
Corning-Xenon-and-Side-Light.png
I would never change a halogen headlamp for an LED as they are not designed to work with the headlamp reflector housing design or approved at present.

Kenny

You first rate mechs will probably have no problems with the bumper removal, but I chickened out and got the garage to initially take the bumper partially off and remove DRL bulbs for me. Now the thread and the bulb holders are greased up, and with a cable tie I fixed through the bulb casing, it is now easy to do by hand.

Sticky's mod looks like the business, but I don't have the patience these days! :-D

I didn't realise until I looked this up that both dip and main were HIDs. I assumed that they were same as on my Mk1 with only dip being HID. I had put this down to the time it takes for the HID bulbs to strike and that they stay on all the time once switched on and that H7s were used for main as they came on instantly.

With that in mind, how long do your HIDs take to come on when switching to main?

Instantly Paul. The one bulb does all - so in effect, the projector unit has a shutter mechanism that is electronically opened and closed to allow full light (main Beam) or closed to dip the light output (dipped).

On my Mark II with a similar system, they incorporated a standard Halogen Main Beam lamp in addition to the Xenon. They opted to remove that on the X7.

When my lights come on, they initialise themselves by moving up and down several times to check the levelling function. Then you can have the directional lighting function switched on or off via the lighting configuration menu.

I wonder what I have fitted but I suspect it is the normal halogen lights. Thanks for your thoughts Paul-R on the led conversions.

Yes I think I recall you have the standard Halogen lamps Kenny - On this headlight unit, your Angular or Cornering lights that come on when the steering wheel is turned at a junction or going quite slowly to light up the left or right side paths use a standard H7 bulb - so will be different to mine that use the HP19W. Useful for parking at night.

You will have one of these 2 variants in this post:
https://www.frenchcarforum.co.uk/forum/ ... 20#p545678

Directly underneath, are the 2 versions of the Bi-directional Xenon Headlamp Units for comparison.
