what about rust on the sills? Here in Ireland the failed mechanics at the NCT centre are always jamming screwdrivers into the sills to make them fail.
why?

Thanks, I am relieved but on hind sight there was nothing wrong with the way it drove, so I'm going to pretend I was always confident, especially to my new car lease driving friends :)

In fairness they are going a bit orange, and I'm sure next year or the following year it might need attention but I have a spare set on my spares car in the garden which look brand new!

UK MOT testers are not permitted to poke things with screwdrivers as I understand it...

Not in my experience Jim. They punched an orange sized hole in my osr sill which definitely wasnt there when i took it in. Maybe its because its a diesel, and an old one at that. Going in tmro to see if it's worth, or even possible, salvaging. Might meet its maker if costs are too high 😞

The manual says:
3. Corrosion assessment
Having identified the important load bearing members and ‘prescribed
areas’ on a vehicle, the tester should determine whether they are
excessively corroded, firstly by visual inspection and then by finger and
thumb pressure.
If necessary, the Corrosion Assessment Tool should be used to assess
the extent of any corrosion by careful scraping or light tapping of the
affected areas.
It is important that use of the Corrosion Assessment Tool is restricted to
ascertaining that the failure criteria are met and not used for heavy
scraping or poking of the affected areas.
Excessively corroded metal, or metal treated with filler, emits a duller
sound than unaffected metal. It is not permissible to apply heavy impact
blows or to use a sharp instrument to probe at the structure.

The 'corrosion assessment tool' is about the size of a toffee hammer! A seemingly sound panel can yield a fairly large hole when investigated - a couple of weeping paint bubbles on the sill of our Xsara Picasso turned into a hole 3" wide, 7" long, and paint loss along the bottom edge of the sill for about 2 feet without too much persuasion!!

That sounds about right then. I can now get my hand into the underside to check for any further rust 😠

'Corrosion assessment tool' made me smile lol.

We had a similar experience on the camper van on its first MOT with us. I thoughit would need a small patch but the'corrosion assessment tool' turned it in to a gaping hole about 1.5 metres long. VW in their infinite wisdom didn't fit a drain for the condensation for the fridge (despite ours being a factory conversion). It was very alarming watching them slicing into our van like a knife through butter! I must learn to weld!

Absolutely amazing really they didn't think about that, factory conversion too! The camper is a lot of fun but is a constant rust battle. Next thing is the front cab steps, water drips down the door seals and collects there. Genius
