I just noticed there's a yield sign down the road (give way in the UK) with stop printed on the road beside it. I'll get a photo later

 I could relate that to a number of Irish jokes but I'll resist the temptation....

That was one of the primary purposes of the little branch line that ran into my home town before they built a secondary school here... Once the new school was open Beeching then closed the line...

The line is now a cycle path and part of National Cycle Route 6...

The only time I ever put 4d on the railway was on top of the tracks to have them squashed by the next passing train...

The wonderful things we did as kids...

607 Trolleybus, Uxbridge.jpg
2d (tuppence) each way on the 607 Trolleybus from West Ealing to Ealing Broadway for me to get to school on Ealing Green . . . about six or seven stops. What's the minimum TfL bus fare now?

Sometimes walked it, later cycled (the Fred Dean, Jim!), and finally a Vespa 125. Walks through the park could be quite educational, I remember... 8-[

Love that trollybus Chris - and the A35 van in the background :) Looks like an Austin Cambridge a little in front of the A35...

Never realised trolleybuses ran that late in London - that picture was from the early 60s I guess?

London's last trolleybus ran from Fulwell depot, and was withdrawn from service in May 1962.
Lots on the web about the London trolleys, including videos.

Photo above is of one of the late Q-type trolleys, which did less than 10 years of service before being sold off to S.Africa and Spain, amongst other places. On the west London routes where they ran, the Q's were taken out of service and replaced with ancient trolleybus stock in the run-up to closure. The Q's were fast, silent, and carried up to 72 passengers iirc. The Routemasters which replaced them never quite matched up. Looking back, what folly.

Well, yes . . . sort of.
Today, there is a Peugeot dealer at 144-146 Uxbridge Road, Hanwell (near the Clocktower), so presumably the ghostly trolleybuses still unknowingly run by!
Spooky!

There were still trolleybuses running in Maidstone for some time after we got married in '63, they used to turn round at the end of the Tonbridge - Maidstone road which ran alongside the river Medway for some distance. There is also an early Bedford CA split windscreen van in that picture, it was getting on a bit then.

Sadly yes, a terrible folly and one that's hard to understand could ever be allowed to happen...

Ditto Beeching and the railways... Those long-closed railways are so badly needed now. If only they'd mothballed them for a while rather than just tearing them up with reckless abandon. Seems, on reflection, they couldn't wait to get on with the job as soon as possible

There seems to be something of a revival now, especially down here. When we came in 1970 Axminster had a huge marshalling yard, you had to climb across the rails to get to the small industrial estate the other side, it also had a line from there to Lyme regis, all that's gone now and Axminster was left with just a single track.

In recent years another line has been put in and a new platform and footbridge built, the new line gives a passing place for trains as the service has been considerably increased, in fact the station is now quite busy now with the large carpark pretty well full.

Pity about the Lyme Regis and Seaton stations. Several attempts have been made to operate a private line to Lyme, sadly without success, but part of the old Seaton line is now a tramway.

This was a genuine sign I found in an old local government bunker. I had visions of the poor bods sat at their desks in the transition to war period - cross legged and cross eyed, desperately hoping that one side or the other would lob a nuke so they could finally go and use the toilets :rofl2:
