Re: Pickled Egg Jukebox-1977 Hits! +anything you fancy!

Post by NewcastleFalcon »

Steve.......Thanks for the like of my "Tintin Blue Lotus and the Flower Duet" post! Being a bit of a number freak it took me to my first century of likes!

To mark the ocassion I had better select another track from the 1977 pool

Got to be one of my go to bands whose every tune I know backwards, I have played them so much over the years..
Becker and Fagen with Michael McDonald in the background.

Poor offering on the singles.
Only:

But better by Elkie Brooks.

And:

Not one of his best but perhaps nice in the Laid Back section.

Similar with the albums.
The only ones remotely tempting are: "War Of The Worlds" (Jeff Wayne).
"The Bride Stripped Bare" (Brian Ferry, but only because it is Brian Ferry, not familiar with the album).
"Rumours" Fleetwod Mac - an iconic album that received much playing time here when it came out.
And "The Album" (ABBA) for the anthemic:

Which very neatly gives me an excuse yo add this:

IMO their best song, surprisingly as I hate squeeze-boxes normally (too much Jimmy Shand on the radio when young) but it fits the bill perfectly here.

Have to agree Steve its somehow slipped into a top 75 as well!

Dean Friedman, co-incidentally is doing "tracks of my years" on Ken Bruce's show on Radio 2 this week, but "Lucky Stars" at number 4 although instantly recognisable is......cringeworthy to my ears. Ivor Biggun is in there for some unknown reason, Bobins' favorite Hilda Baker and Arthur Mullard are in with their version of "You are the one that I want", yes not much there.

Seeing as the PE is a pub, and after a few engine oils, the punters like an easy chorus to join in with I have had to resort to Sham 69.....

I was quite amused by Sam The Sham & The Pharoes when they were extant. Is this the same crew?

Agreed again Steve, thanks for picking something out.....

I'm going to have to go for "new boots and panties" if only for the fact that Ian Dury occupied several slots on the Poly Jukebox so reminds me of those times!

If you are refering to Sham 69 I think not.....this from Wiki is where they got their name!
Sham 69 formed in Hersham in 1976. The band's name is said to have derived from a piece of graffiti that founder Jimmy Pursey saw on a wall. It originally said Walton and Hersham '69 but had partly faded away, and made reference to when Walton & Hersham F.C. secured the Athenian League title in 1969.[

Hurry up Harry came up in conversation at work only last week, an example of a whole raft of songs with male names in the title:- Gordon is a Moron, Is Vic There?, Making Plans for Nigel & Clever Trevor were the ones that came immediately to mind.

Its summer, right? Bit of smooth jazz/ tropical island vibe from a scraper into the charts in 1979. Maybe a bit samey if you let it autoplay on too much, but a bit of a drizzle anti-dote....

Heading for the laid back soundzz we have

Quite liked "Havanna Moonlight" as it autoplayed on.

When you think about iconic albums Supertranp's Breakfast in America has to be up there. In the charts for the selected week in 1979, and probably the most moving song on the album is this. Just live versions on youtube

From a lovely well crafted song from Roger Hodgson and Supertramp to a little bit of bar room musical knowledge trivia...

What's the connection between this

The girls are better looking?

Usual YouTube serendipity threw this up;

Bought the LP years ago (Windows, Central Arcade, Newcastle) just for this track.

There's no denying that Steve :-D

The true connection is one of the blokes from Mud, Rob Davis.....(top right in Pic), went on to co-write both "Can't get you out of my head" and "Groovejet".

Thanks to Radio Newcastle for the fascinating trivia.

Private Investigations is a fine example of Mark Knopfler's vocal style...and as a whole a great track. Can't really imagine anyone ever being able to cover it. Tina Turner did of course make a fantastic job of "Private Dancer" in my opinion, but would be surprised if there were any decent covers out there, but I have never looked.
