Err, only slightly off topic

Post by demag »

We went to Cosford with the grand children yesterday. The weather wasn't too bad, just one short light shower and there was so much to see. I just clicked away with my phone camera but the one thing that became apparent was the planes are so large its a struggle to get them in the shot.

I have been to RAF Cosford once (there was a Citroen rally there), and spent AGES wandering around.

i've been myself a few years ago, what a wonderful place. Not sure if they've got any new planes there but there was plenty to see when I went. Unfortunately it gave me a sense of melancholy, especially the rotting de Havilland Comet outside, one of my favorite planes ever :)

Either way, Highly recomended!

Dave, become a devotee of Picture(s) of the Day...Its impossible to go off topic...lets face it there's even been a military toilets day! Shots such as the one you have put up, are the food and drink of that thread.

Never even sure where Cosford was, but I know now thanks to my contniuing curiousity and your post. Between Telford and Wolverhampton, so not far off from Shrewsbury where we had a little mini-holiday not so long back.

I thought at first that was an original Comet 1 but the round windows suggest it's a later one.. The round windows are the give-away. the first ones had square windows which caused cracks to start in the fuselage resulting in explosive decompression...

It was very much a case of the boundaries of current knowledge being pushed to the absolute limit; many valuable lessons were learned.

The Comet is a real good looker of an aircraft even now :)

Totally agree, love the engine-in -wing design. It was such a shame however by the end they'd sorted the window-explosion thing but confidence had been lost and by then the americans took over from there if i'm not mistaken.

All was not lost, the comet became the Nimrod and was used for years in the RAF until the recent scrappings.

Not much of a 'classic good looker' but it still has it's charm in my opinion.

Yes, that's exactly right, the Boeing 707 took over where the Comet should, by rights, have dominated...

An aircraft is nothing more than a flying coach anyway... Or bus if your choice of aircraft is French ;)

My mum and dad had a flight on concorde, after they stopped the atlantic crossings, there was an hour or so flight from raf kinloss. They came back, after being taken there on a coach, saying the coach was roomier, quieter and more comfortable. Mind you concorde was 1/2 French :rofl2:

Concorde was never about comfort and luxury... It concentrated on being fast! It was incredibly cramped and pokey. I believe and anyone over six feet tall was assured a very uncomfortable trip... A good job the trips were completed in short time!

But going off-topic is an FCF speciality ;) It is the law that all topics must drift...

And long may it continue and may we enjoy military toilets of all the major armed forces to boot :)

Topics drifting invariably leads us to some incredibly interesting places....
