So as you might expect, BYD have an electric bin wagon, ready to roll out and make a few quid from, but as Gibbo said nothing new.....
You only have to look at the Huddersfield Daily Examiner from 2009. Don't know whats happened since 2009, and not sure why all bin lorries in the UK haven't followed on to be all electric by July 2017. Back in 2009 they even burned the rubbish they collected to make the electricity to recharge the batteries!

The problem is not with the dust cart providers it's with the people, back in the day when those I posted were in use the only thing they collected was ash from the fire grate, almost nobody has a fire grate nowadays so all the tat has to be taken away and of course there's a lot more tat.
Man is, by nature, a lazy beast, he does not need twice encouraging to do nothing.

is there ever! I never fail to be staggered at just how much rubbish most of my neighbours generate each week; walking up to the pool on a Monday morning I get to see it in all its glory...
I can tell a lot from people's rubbish - like who the heavy boozers are and who lives almost entirely on take-aways
My weekly rubbish is tiny... Two very small bags - one for recyclables and one for non - the non is always the very tiniest...

My weekly rubbish is tiny... Two very small bags - one for recyclables and one for non - the non is always the very tiniest...
We are the same - recycling is collected fortnightly, as is general crap, with the weeks alternated.
We (my son and I) can go a month without needing to put the bins out.
The neighbours must wonder what we live on as everyone else has mountains of it - more that can be contained in the bins.
About the only exception is when I attack the ivy when I can't get out of the back gate - that generates a lot of bin-fodder (that shouldn't be there ) and needs covering with acceptable rubbish

Electric bikes
Todays post is in the Electric Bikes part of the thread.
Always fancied giving one a try, and it couldn't have been simpler and was the best £5 I have spent for ages.
For £5, I got the use of one of these for an hour, and in that hour, I cycled all round Derwent Reservoir on a mixture of quiet roads and cycle paths I guess around 10-12 miles. It was one of those days as well where the reservoir was more like the Bay of Biscay, and the cold driving drizzle, soaked me to the skin. But it was just a brilliant way to spend an hour..bracing but energising.
The cycle itself was simplicity. 8 gears on a twist selection with your right hand, and on the left hand the electric assistance which you could set at zero, eco, tour, sport, or turbo. On the way back round into the wind flicked it up to turbo....why not!....nice feeeling and no need to push yourself unnecessarily. Probably over 12 months since I last sat on a bike..it was a decent workout without the puffing and panting.
I did make an electric bike schoolboy error though. Had it in top gear (8th) gradually slowing up climbing a hill, flicked the electric to turbo, but nothing much happened. Yes it was as hard for the electric motor as me to generate the necessary power when all momentum had been lost and you are trying to pull up a steep hill in top gear.
Flicked it down a few gears and whoosh we are away again, and the electric motor is doing the job i expected of it again.

Neil, most interested in your road test of an e-bike
The KTM will be one of the better ones too...
Not my cup of tea but I do note that e-bikes are increasingly making an appearance in cycle sportives...
On a similar topic I have just heard on local news the 'Boris Bikes' scheme run by Santander in Milton Keynes is soon to be abandoned due to constant vandalism and abuse of the bikes... Only half are ever in service...
Some incidents of vandalism have been incurred with angle grinders and pick-axes! What possesses people to do such acts?

Getting right back on topic - here is a lovely conversion of a 1979 Porsche 911 to full EV, including restoration work to the car. (Not just an EV conversion)
Motor at the rear, batteries at both front and rear. Whats interesting is that they managed to squeeze 54kWh worth of batteries into the car - using Tesla Roadster batteries, giving it about a 200 mile range. It also performs nearly a second better 0-60 than the original 3.2 litre V6 engine.
Also interesting that unlike most commercial EV's which have only one fixed gear ratio, this one has 5 gears, but is perfectly capable of accelerating rapidly from a standstill in 4th gear!
I have just one question - why does it still have a standard rev counter...

Fast forward to 7 minutes 30 seconds to see a tiny "hotted up" 1970's Enfield 8000 EV, which was originally 8 bhp (yes, you read that right) called "Flux capacitor", which is now fast enough to do the 1/4 mile drag strip in 9.869 seconds. To give some perspective that beats the fastest Tesla Model S that can do it in about 10.4 seconds, which itself routinely beats all but the fastest drag cars...
Somehow I think that tiny thing with that much power would be hellava scary to drive even in a straight line, especially when it appears to be RWD!
