I saw Patti Smith there not too long ago, no signs of age catching up with her either :)

An odd confluence of threads.
Van mentions that 1959 was an epic year in the 'classics' thread and I just mentioned Patti Smith.

One thing I have never worked out is what it was in 1959 that she was singing about
"We built that thing and it grew wings"

Steve this interview with Patti may shed some light on the song 1959
Here's the relevant bit
from http://louderthanwar.com/interview-patt ... es-nuttal/

Something I have always wanted to know but that I never get around to asking is the meaning behind the song 1959, which appears on one of my favourite Patti Smith albums, Peace and Noise. It was this album I listened to while walking around Hebden Bridge on that sunny September day as I waited for Patti to arrive at the Trades.

The lyrics are very ambiguous and cinematic, which is probably the reason why I was so intrigued. I took his chance to find out exactly what it was written about. “Tony wrote that, my bass player, he wrote the music. In 1959 I was like 12 years old and I loved Tibet. I was doing a current events story about Tibet in school; more specifically, everyone chose a country and then you had to cut out all the newspaper articles about your country. I chose Tibet and the teacher said ‘well, you can’t choose Tibet, there’s never any articles about Tibet’, and that was in 1958. So, I was obstinate and I wanted to have Tibet, and every week when we showed our scrapbook to show newspaper articles I didn’t have anything. And the teacher said you me ‘you’re going to fail the whole year because you don’t have anything.’

“So, I just was steadfast and then one Sunday my father said to me ‘Patricia, your country is in the newspaper.’ And I looked and it was the cover of the newspaper that China had invaded, it was in March of ’59. I was horrified, of course, it wasn’t the kind of news that I wanted to report, but I’d studied so much about it that I knew all about his holiness, and it was a terrible thing, but my scrapbook got filled up and I had quite a bit of news to tell about my country.

“So, the song reflects that; the song 1959, it’s ‘Listen to my story, got two tales to tell’, it’s like the Dickens thing, The Tale of Two Cities: there was the 1959 American dream happening with the big cars and the beatniks… everything. Thinking of what America was up to in 1959 and then on the other side of the world, the horror of what was happening in Tibet. It just came into my head. When I heard the music I really liked it, and Tony was born in 1959.

“It was well received, it didn’t win one but it got nominated for a Grammy, and I was happy for Tony because he’s quite a good songwriter.
One of the lines contrasts Tibet, and the US

Wisdom and compassion crushed,In the land of Shangri-La
But in the land of the Impala, Honey, well, we were lookin' fine

Could the Impala be the Chevrolet Impala, which did have considerable wings

Thanks Neil, puts that to bed :)

Odd that you mention The Trades in Hebden Bridge.
At the CCC meet someone spotted my Imogen Heap T shirt and started a conversation, he had seen her at The Sage a couple of times and had travelled from the Manchester area, then he mentioned the Trades, had seen her and a lot of others there.
Looks a decent venue.

On to 1975

Start off with the singles

http://www.officialcharts.com/charts/si ... 1005/7501/

Wow! (thats a sarcastic Wow by the way) Not surprising the punk/new wave shake up was brewing.

Still I do like The Trammps "Hold Back the night" but actually much prefer the Graham Parker Version so even though that version is not in the chart selected it's getting the nod from me!

Just listened to the Trammps.....they were excellent too...just a different "feel" from the 2 versions

Have to admit to a liking for "Sailing"

But more for this from the same album, but this is better than the album version.

Amy Bell better than Rod - then that Sax

No Woman No Cry is such an anthem and cannot be ignored.

Although I never bought into the Bob Marley hype.

Love this version:

Just for her personality.
(I'm coming down ta see ya") :)
Infectious smile and she surely made the security guard's day!

There's a bit of a back story to that duet with Rod I found out. This is from the Daily Record in 2007, but its Ten Years After now (.....now that could be a random link) and I am not sure where the Amy Belle story went after that.

Yes, I was hopeful that her career would take off and fly but there is virtually nothing going on.

I took a link from Sailing. I knew that Gavin Sutherland/the Sutherland Brothers had written it. I remember playing an album of theirs called "Dream Kid". I did find their original version of Sailing on you tube, which when you are used to the "production" on Rod's Cover, is very much more raw in comparision. Some commenters liked it better, and another mentioned a cover by one of my All Time Favourites Robin Trower which I was unaware of.

link here if you want to give it a try
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FqXsuZsN5kg

.....but for a better introduction, if you need it to Robin Trower this is essentially him.....and of course Jimmy Dewar on vocals/bass and on this occcasion Reg Isadore on drums., a few marshall amps and a stratocaster... The Bridge of Sighs album was his/their masterpiece as far as I am concerned, with For Earth Below following closely. Never really kept up with his activity after that but he's still performing.

In the category of "anything you fancy" but also a tenuous link back via Sailing to the chart of 1975

Quite like than Neil.

I have been meaning to listen to Robin Trower for ages now and that was reinforced by a mention that JST had opened for him.

So what did the 1975 albums chart look like for our random week.....

This

http://www.officialcharts.com/charts/al ... 1005/7502/

Time for a delve!

People were still buying Roger Whittaker in their droves for some reason :-D . One of my favourites has made an appearance..."The Snow Goose" by Camel...(Andy Latimer's guitar solo on "Rhayader comes to town" is a particular highlight for me) and in general, plenty in the chart to pull out some well-loved tracks.

I'll peruse a bit then select one. Feel free to join in and do the same.

Other than ones already addressed there are thin pickings there.
Hadn't heard of Tomita so had a bit of a listen.
Not taken.
I have the ELP version but even that is a poor relation to a full orchestra.
Ended up listening to that then all sorts of other stuff and finished with Dido

First I spotted was that was of interest was -

I bought an LP in Sweden, "Fritt Fram" by Lill Lindfors (a Finnish woman living in Sweden but you would never know she wasn't Swedish), now a UN ambassador.

The LP had several surprises on it, none of which will get posted here as try as I might I have always been unable to find any on YouTube.

Aria was one of them and it was years before I discovered it was one of Acker Bilk's. Bought that album too.
Still have and play both LPs occasionally.
