It was just a guess Gibbo, given the red tail lights....

I was unaware they could also act as indicators. I thought that was the reason why so many Moggies were (often poorly) fitted with additional orange indicator lamps front and rear... They never looked right...

If it's still there tomorrow I'll take another look...

Did you see trafficators on that Jim?

It looks like a 1963 Morris 1000 to me and if so should have flashers, they used those rear lamps and had red flashers rear and white flashers front at the start (from 1961)
The Reg.No. on DVLA records shows a February 1959 Morris 1000 4 Door Saloon.

I took a front view of the car in question and it has original small white sidelights below the headlights...

1959 - it'll be MOT exempt, almost exactly the same age as me, and made in the year of the Mini and Ford Anglia first appeared... A vintage year :)

Jim, just an aside , in my research into the car which turned out to be a Hillman Minx up popped our old Frenchman Robert Loewy. His outfit were responsible for the design of the minx in the early 1950's.

http://www.simoncars.co.uk/hillman/mminx.html

Now I hestiate to put up a picture as representative of this groundbreaking work as he turned the Minx into a "three-box" more modern car, because it is not to my taste and I still have the opinion that the Studebaker Avanti was his finest hour! :-D

That's most interesting on the Minx Neil :) Thanks for posting it... I must admit they're not my favourite series of Minx and I much prefer the 'Audax' series and my personal favourite is the final incarnation of the Minx as a derivative of the Rootes 'Arrow' (Hunter) series...

I still think the Arrows are incredibly attractive cars even now; a view shared by millions of Iranians I guess too ;)

Spotted this beaut today on my tour...

A fully working vehicle and far from a cosseted classic even though it's in gorgeous condition :)

Perfectly in keeping with the time-warp village I saw it in!

When I was a kid one ran round our village in the guise of a milk float...

Also saw a vintage Lambretta Scooter with a matching sidecar attached in Barton on Sea. Sadly it was moving and so was I so no picture sadly...

Ah, the Austin 101 or J type from Morris Commercial.

A good workhorse if a bit underpowered at the start with the Morris side valve engine, better later with the Austin OHV.

Now if you like the Morris J there is just a chance that you may like the International Harvester Metro van.

Yes, thanks Monsieur Loewy :-D

Regards Neil

PS that Morris J- older than your good self Jim. 1957 vintage there, and a 1,622 cc lump :-D

We had our own 'Metro' company in Birmingham, they built much bigger stuff. :)

While all French vans of that era had a certain je ne sais quoi, always thought that ol' J-type was uniquely stylish over here (however never knew the Austin was a 101). Surely not a 1622 though, didn't that arrive in '63(?) with the A60, etc?

Surely Minors didn't stilll have red rear indicators in '59, Ford dropped them 5 years earlier. In fact, I'm not sure, saloons at least, ever had them & like most British cars didn't go straight from trafficators to amber (rear) indicators.

'59 also heralded the - Herald! albeit with less fanfare but straight away actually made the other 2 look quite dated. Then of course '59 really was America's year: not onlythe pinnacle of Detroit Gothic: the fabulous Cadillac Fleetwood, especially in Type 75 limo guise, but the lesser known but, in my book, absolutely stunning Chevy Impala.

1,622 cc just purely from the DVLA record for the Reg No Van, but it may have been fitted with later engine,

1.6 litre Mark II B-Series engine was fitted to many models in the early 1960's including amongst others:
1961–62 MGA Mark II
1961–69 Austin Cambridge A60
1961-67 Morris J2 1/2-ton vans
1961–71 Morris Oxford VI
1961–71 Wolseley 16/60
1961–69 Riley 4/72
1961–68 MG Magnette Mark IV.....
........etc,etc

Looks like Jim's little van may have had an engine transplant!

Wiki does quote this
from https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Morris_Commercial_J-type

The J type is fitted with a 1476 cc four-cylinder side-valve engine based on the one used in the contemporary Morris Oxford MO car. Drive to the rear wheels is through a three-speed gearbox and initially a spiral bevel type rear axle, later replaced by a hypoid type.

The van was updated to the JB in 1957 when an overhead valve 1489 cc, BMC B-Series engine was fitted along with a four-speed gearbox.

That MO Oxford side valve engine wasn't bad but like the whole BMC range it was dropped when Morris and Austin merged and replaced with the Austin ohv engine which as time moved on grew in steps from 1200cc to 1622cc.

What I remember was different about the Morris engine is that it had a Tufnol camshaft gear for silent running.

Saw the MG again this morning and managed to get the reg but the DVLA have no record of it.
We usually pass at a combined speed of 80mph in lots of traffic so haven't been able to snag it before now.
