Heaven forbid that everyone in China runs in the same direction at the same time. :rofl2:

Or jumps up and down. :)

Jumping up and down would be too random in timing to have any net effect, as some people would be landing as others were jumping up etc. But if everyone in China were to run east or west for 30 seconds at the same time it would definitely affect the rotation of the earth, but it would return to normal after they stopped! :)

Some of the comments below that article about the practicality of ultra-rapid recharging are interesting. The physics/maths of shifting 100 (or even 50) kWh in 1 minute (or even 5) are something of a consideration.

Could just be Toyota trying to play catch-up. They have been dragging their feet.

This morning, UK Govt announces it will ban sales of ICE cars!

Doesn't bear any resemblance to the standard Zoe under the hood (it's based off their Formula E hardware) and is a one of concept car (albeit perfectly driveable) but interesting nevertheless...

...and the well known financial expert Quentin Wilson was quick with a soundbyte of what a catestrophic sum of money it all would cost to switch from petrol/diesel to electric. Wait a few minutes and the SSMT will be claiming its impossible.

Made for interesting "phone-ins" on the radio, as the general public started talking about it. Have to say it could have been worse. I think you have to expect that the public in general will be quite ignorant of the sort of discussions that have sprung from this thread, but already they and some of the presenters assume what has been said is that all petrol and diesel cars will be banned from 2040. Miles off and not quick enough to capitalise on the economic opportunities offered by the change in my opinion but better than nothing. Good news that the electric Mini is to be built here.

And why are large sections of the public quite ignorant on these (and a good few other important) matters?
That's the really depressing question.

I think it's a marketing 'spoiler' by Toyota, to buy them extra time. Battery (or capacitor) development is one thing; defying the laws of physics/energy transfer is something else.

Interesting that BBC Breakfast's item on BEVs yesterday concentrated on the practical problem of thousands of garage/driveway-less street dwellers who would need to plug in overnight. A rather limp suggestion centred on uprated street light posts. Trouble is, not everyone has one of these outside...

Far more farsighted could be shallow-burying high-frequency cables in the road, not far from the kerb, and allowing any parked vehicle to inductively charge itself, wherever it was positioned. Extend this to buried cables along carriageways, and range of EVs would be hugely extended, and allow PSVs and HGVs to operate unhindered too.

BMW are reportedly already operating this with a fleet of parts-delivery trucks in Germany, where it is allowing BEV HGVs to operate round the clock.

All this does, however, require some central thinking and government coordination. At the moment, there is no evidence that the British government is capable of anything resembling this, or has any inclination even to explore it.

Tried to find a clip of Quentin Wilson's comment on the "Petrol and Diesel Car Ban from 2040" on Good Morning Britain, BBC Radio etc in vain. The Government might as well have just said it was to be an outright ban rather than a more woolly ban on selling new petrol and diesel cars, to get all of the bleating over in one go.

I for one am going to find it entertaining/irritating in equal measure as the opposition to the 23 year lead in time to adjust start claiming its impossible or not enough time!

The boss of Ford has suddenly emerged from the woodwork to appear on "Wake up to money" on Radio 5 as my alarm went off this morning. Didn't hear what he had to say as morning abloutions took over but there will be more to follow no doubt!

Has anyone ever seen Ford's flagship EV the Electric Focus on the road :?: 999 points if you see one today :-D

Well, these matters are pretty tedious to most people! I can't imagine my wife and her friends sitting down and talking about the inner workingso of BEVs or how to wire up a street to supply cars with electricity. Quite right too! They're not stupid, but have no interest at all in what goes on under their car bonnets as long as it starts, goes and stops.
