Just idly nudging the title year onto 1971, and would you believe it a song I heard on the radio this very morning comes up at number 9 on this chart

http://www.officialcharts.com/charts/si ... 1010/7501/

Never heard it for ages and it would have ben a good pop quiz question

Who were the band that did "Witch Queen of New Orleans"?

The answer is obviously here on the youtube link, but I wouldn't have got it, but did know it when I found out!

...and Curved Air were still in the charts at 32 with Back Street Luv...one of my favorites again haven't heard it for years

..and I do remember the name of the lead singer Sonja Kristina

Other notables in that weeks top 50 Doors-Riders on the Storm at 50 heading to no 1., Jethro Tull at 11 with Life's a long song. Quite a lot literally of Middle of the Road dross though (Chirpy Chirpy Cheep Cheep and Tweedle Dum Tweedle Dee)

Having given it a listen, I think its worth putting up "Lifes a long song"

I picked the Pioneers out from the 1970 chart for the week selected and one year on they were in again with a nice performance of this

Funny, I thought Witch Queen & Redbone (still, I believe, the only full blooded American Indian to have charted) were synonymous. On, the other hand (yeah, I know, 4 fingers & a thumb!) I would never have got "The Pioneers"

Pickled Egg Jukebox-1972 Hits! +anything you fancy!

Post by NewcastleFalcon »

I have nudged the year onto 1972, using the same "week", a hangover from the 1969 week when Bobbie Gentry was at Number 1 in 1969 :-D

Here's the 1972 Chart selected

First up on the interesting list, never heard for a while is.....

Dissapointed I had hoped the blast from the past from Family and the dulcet tones of Roger Chapman would have brought the memories flooding back. So before we depart from the chart from 1972 I'll just peruse the list myself and mention the gems...all no doubt available on youtube, spotify, or whatever....

Peter Skellern is in there with Your a Lady, was just going to list them but when Peter has the Grimethorpe Colliery Band providing the backing you have to get the full link..

So what else did that chart from 1972 provide?

T-Rex Children of the Revolution
David Bowie John I'm only dancing
Roxy Music Virginia Plain
Animals House of the Rising Sun
Shangri Las Leader of the Pack
Derek & The Dominoes Layla

Onwards to 1973

That MUST've been a re-release of House of the Rising Sun, surely!?

I mean by then ar Eric'd gone off to War/'Frisco/join the Fire Brigade (not to be confused with The Move's song of that name), Chas Chandler was out of work, Hendrix having been dead a couple of years, as was Hilton Valentine - I think.

I had thought for a long time that Eric Burdon & The Animals were defunct but found they were still touring a while back, as evidenced by this unusual pairing.

A former employer was a Burdon. (Burdon Publicity) Never found if they were related (same area).

Let's try 1973 to stimulate a bit of participation...

and as an added bonus not only

the singles chart

But also

the albums chart

There's got to be something in there to stir up some memories! :-D

..well on a quick perusal not a vintage singles chart for that week but "Rock On" by David Essex was a sound of the times so that's my selection for this evening....

More scope in the album charts but a strange chart in itself....Sing along with Max, Singalonga Max Vol 2, and Singalonga Max Vol 3 outselling Dark side of the moon!

The albums chart does have a better choice!

Simon & Garfunkel:

I think I have that one somewhere - certainly every track off it.
And:

Like yesterday.

Mike Oldfield:

Never gets old.

Nilsson - although that one is unknown to me.

Paul Simon:

A Clockwork Orange:

Jesus Christ Superstar
- have that album but for one track only :)

Lou Reed "Transformer"

Roxy Music "For Your Pleasure"

Yes the singles chart for that particular week doesn't excite me much, and although it may have its followers "The Laughing Gnome" wasn't the greatest example of Bowie's work although he was very popular in the album chart.

It was a time when young girls probably preferred David Cassidy to me! But then again that chart has educated me a bit about my rival....he had to be a really nice guy...he had an English Setter (and declaring my bias here we had too! A tri-colour just like David's)....marketed as such with his hit double A side daydreamer/puppy love. So I'll give him another listen. Marginally better than selecting one of Max Bygraves renditions from his hit albums in the chart at the time.

Can't imagine anyone is going to play the full 2 minutes 43 seconds of that!
