Non functioning icons and notification colours

Post by Mandrake »

A couple of minor issues I thought I better report, one with emoticons that seems to have broken some time in the last few months, and a long standing issue with notifications.

There seem to be a couple of emoticons that aren't working, (text isn't substituted for the correct icon) below I've clicked on all the standard set of icons in order so you can see the two that only show up as text:

:rofl2: :-D :) :( :o  :? 8-) :x :P       :!: :?:   :| =D> #-o =P~ :^o [-X [-o< 8-[

I haven't checked the extended set of emoticons as I don't generally use them, but I guess it's possible some of them have issues too, so might be worth someone checking.

The other issue I've had for a long time (forever ?) is that the background colour highlight of the message list in the notifications drop down is far too subtle - on some displays its nearly impossible to see which messages are unread and which are read. The contrast is more visible on my iPhone than it is on a Windows PC, perhaps due to gamma differences - on both my work PC and Windows 7 laptop at home the difference in background shading is so subtle I can't tell the difference.

It would be nice if the unread messages had a more obvious background colour contrast - sometimes I just can't work out which ones I haven't read yet and have to click mark all as read, which isn't ideal as I end up missing things I should be reading.

The broken smileys is a known bug in phpBB v3.2.0. It is not clear whether it is fixed in v3.2.1 which we will probably upgrade to in a couple of weeks (after others have found most of the new bugs in that).

The notification colour is something I can look into.

Not sure how this looks on other peoples screens but the first message is a very faint light pink to me:

I can just make out the difference on the screen I'm currently using but not on some others. Because it's fairly bright and subtle I suspect anyone with their brightness or contrast set a bit too high on an LCD screen will find the light pink crushed to nearly white, and on some laptops you can't really fix this as they don't have both adjustments.

Looks normal to me on my iPhone 6Plus, if you are talking about Jim's first message. I suspect it is your mobile screen giving out possibly Simon.

For a trial period, I have made the background for new notifications a bit pink. I agree that the previous grey did not have much contrast.

You may need to delete your browser cache to see the new colour.

If feedback is positive, I may make the change permanent.

You have my comment backwards. It's visible on my phone, (although still not brilliant) but difficult to discern on some PC / Laptop screens I use. It's not uncommon for LCD screens to crush the highlights unless you set the contrast relatively low (60% ish)

However on all the various devices I do the contrast between the two is not sufficient, even for someone like me with good eyesight.

That's certainly a lot more contrasting. :) I'll check it on the laptop at home tonight, that was probably the most difficult to discriminate on.

Interesting that you say you've changed it from grey to pink - it was always a very pale pink on my various screens, it never looked like pure grey. It just looks like a darker shade of pink to me now. Also the background colour in actual posts is a very similar very pale pink colour - at least to me. I just assumed this was deliberate.

I can assure you that all the normal background colours of this scheme are neutral greys, like $F8F8F8 or $E4E4E4.

That's the same for me contrast on the high 50s and low brightness, but now it is definitely pink with the changes.

I can't see any difference now.
Before I could just tell, now they appear to be exactly the same shade of the same colour.

Here's a screen shot from mobile and Desktop - as you can see a distinct variation.

No, mine used to look like your desktop Marc, now they are the same colour.
I'll just live with it, every time I clear my cache for FCF it screws up loads of other things.

Yes, I already had cleared my desktop cache several times earlier today - but not after Mike made the change. Much better colour contrast IMO.
