Hmm, yeah I think you're right. I might try with a quicker USB drive perhaps, unless it's bottlenecked by the processor trying to read the files.

Do you know where I can find any technical specifications for the RD45?, info seems a bit thin on the ground :?

I am in long-term process of upgrading the Blaupunkt RD4 N2 to Continental RD45 unit (with only one, white aerial). I just installed new radio in the car, paired with telephone (iPhone 5S iOS 10.3.2) and used music streaming option. I was quite dissatisfied due to some noise scratches in high sound spectrum (opposite to the bass) when playing some rock songs. For example, when in the song we have a percussion sound, it is being kind of hm... deformed. I paired another device (Samsung Galaxy S3) and I have same effect. Did you have any experience with this kind of "sound inconvenience" when using bluetooth streaming? Thank you.

What software are you running on your newer RD45 system? To find out:-
  • Long press 2 4 6 buttons on the car dial pad
  • Long press on 'menu' to change pages

I do know that there was a known issue on the bluetooth audio quality of RD5 units - certainly in the DS4 units - these were replaced if the car was under warranty.

As for the playlists, there have been suggestions that naming the files 1-999 (I believe there to be a 999 file limit) has brought an improvement in play order. Others have created a playlist that links to the files in any folders you have created and then use the playlist.

As for the specs - not too much information:

Manufactured by: Continental
Radio Controller: Texas Instrument TMS 470DSP:
DSP: NXP Dirana2 SAF 7730
Bluetooth & DAB Host: Analog Device BF525
Bluetooth controller: CSR BlueCoreC6 Rom
Operating Temp: -20°C to +70°C
System consists of Hardware modules with embedded software

System is composed of 4 main modules:
  • Radio Controller is master module of the system, it is called Host; It drives AM/FM tuner for analogue radio features
  • Audio processor based on a car Digital Signal Processor; also to provide audio settings and ambiance
  • Multimedia controller for CD, USB and iPod features;
Bluetooth Core is included in ADI BF 525 processor connected to Host processor, it is called CoDSP. It includes BT stack and profiles (provided by a 3 party supplier iAnywhere). It is connected to a HCI controller to provide BT connectivity features
  • DAB Core (optional) is also included in ADI BF 525 processor. It is connected to DAB tuner to provide radio digital features.

    Digital Radio tuner DAB
    USB controller
    CD drive control
    CAN bus driver and interface

Wow, that's a lot of info, thanks Marc.

I think I'll try and make playlists, see if it speeds up the indexing.

Without looking up the datasheets of those components, is the output power known, I think I read somewhere it was around 4x40W but this seems a bit optimistic to me.

Is it possible to update the firmware if there is a newer version available?

I think they were 4 x 23W Elis. The unit has a Class D Amplifier (Pulse Width Modulation) I believe.
No firmware updates available on-line for these units - it's only the telematics units that have firmware updates - which are usually released to support the later mapping updates - although it does provide them with opportunities to squash some bugs / make some improvements.

I just checked the software. By pressing 2-4-6 buttons simultaneously I've got only display blink and infomration "2004L3". I was not able to change the pages (the method is not working on my radio). Next, I took out the radio from car's socket and checked the label:

So that has firmware version 3.2 and is not updatable. I said earlier that only the telematics units have general firmware available - but if your RD45 is version 4.1xx it may be able to be updated to 4.3.03 - however, I have not found this firmware available anywhere - so I think my statement about not being updatable still stands in reality.

I'm sorry - there isn't a definitive list of versions that are affected - I just noted that you have an earlier version, so could be prone to the issues. If you have tried a few different phone models and it is the same, then I think you are stuck with it or send it back to the seller if possible. Either that or rely on the USB for your music and leave the bluetooth for phone calls only.

4x23W sounds about righ to me, I'd really like to upgrade to an external amplifier ideally as I'm happy witht the other features of the RD45, especially the Siri function for my iPhone. And luckily I don't seem to have any issues with the Bluetooth streaming

I'd rather not have to use speaker to line level connectors to be honest, thats why I was investigating the possibility of a line level out from the RD45 in Diagbox.

This is the menu that seems to allude to a line level out on the RD45.

System Hi-Fi Analogique....

I haven't plucked up the courage to change it from standard yet to see

That's interesting. Maybe it is used for activating subwoofer? I believe that there is no subwoofer in standard version of sound equipment - that is why you have to activate it... Who knows... :)

The subwoofer is part of the Philips HiFi pack, with separate amp. The wiring and speakers are different with this upgrade.

In my mind, the "analogique" option would output line level not speaker level outputs for the four speakers....

If that’s true then i can buy "quad lock extension cable" and cut the speaker wires interposing an amplifier in the middle....simple

I'm guessing the "hi-fi numerique" refers to the proper JBL optional amp package that’s has audio delivered over the CAN? ( that’s a complete guess btw)

The lexia has been put away for today haha, when I have more courage I'll give it a go :-D
