C5 RD4 upgrade options bewilderment

Post by MikeT »

Like many before me I'm interested to know what options I have, as the lack of mp3 capability is unforgiveable for a 2005 model imo.

I've seen what looks like my RD4 but also has MP3 capability but wonder if there's something better that's also a straight swap and retains all the integrated functions (steering wheel controls, menu selections, track info etc)?

No, sorry, not from what I've read and not at that price. I have spare parts to make my own AUX-in mini-jack adapter for free if I have to take that route. Yes, the USB and SD slots are welcome but not the bulk of the device and I really want to have full control via the radio or steering controls, using the proper display incl full track info. Anything requiring manipulation of the input device is an unwelcome distraction imo.

I've seen used RD4's with MP3 capability for about the same price but unsure if it has the same/siimilar limitations. I hope not!

I think I would be most satisfied with this RD4. Is it a straight swap (aside from lexia config/coding)?

I can't find specific information about these various radios. For instance, this is an RD4 (N2, what does that depict?) MP3
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Radio-Blaupun ... 2542356134

It looks exactly like mine EXCEPT, it's labelled MP3 above the CD slot and there is a "TEL" button where mine has "BAND".

I've replaced the RD4 in my C5 with the RD45, it has bluetooth and usb compatibility and can be controlled from the steering wheel.

There's some info in this thread if you want to wire up the microphone for the bluetooth phone connection viewtopic.php?f=48&t=58078&p=540330#p540330

ooh, yet another model to investigate. Sounds ideal.

I just learned (possibly incorrectly) that (RD4) N1 and N2 refers to the number of tuners and additional inputs. 1=1, 2=twin tuners (and therefore requires two aerial inputs. Why, I have no idea yet.), and twin AUX inputs.
There's also a D1 and D2 distinction (no idea yet)
MP3 (obvious)
KML (BT hands free?)
VA (automatic volume?) and
SX2 codes to decipher.

There's only some units that are compatible with the different architectures on the vehicles though so be careful. If you are going to upgrade your system Mike, the bees knees for the period was the RT3 system, later to become the RT4/5 - each are telematics units, if you can get hold of one though. They're like hens teeth now. You will need the larger screen and the cabling to go with it so doable, but some work. These units were all made by Magneti Marelli, for the specific architecture of this range and the 407s of the time.

Just googled RT3, Marc - Sat Nav I don't really need and I'm not wanting to change screens with all the work involved..... Wow, just seen some prices they command.... I would much prefer a simple straight swap, recode it and enjoy the new functions. There's several used RD4 MP3 units for not a lot of money but I'm unsure of the subtle differences in the models as mentioned above. I've yet to research the RD45 but it sounds just the ticket.

There is some unused real esate around my radio that's begging to be utilised though. Perhaps a future project involving RaspberryPi or an Android Tablet.

Quick google of RD45, looks unsuitable cosmetically and also commands a high price. Oh well, the search continues...

Just be aware of the compatibility side too as I mentioned earlier Mike. Re the RT3 - this link will give you some idea of the conversion work involved from RD4!

Compatibility is the main issue I'm trying to decipher among the RD4 variants. Think I'm going to kick this venture into touch and just put up with what I have for now.

I've already looked, it's an RD4 N1 with a useless trafficmaster (or whatever it's called).

It must have heard I'm looking to replace it and protested - the Trip and Clim buttons started playing up after I ran a diag session :rofl2: I had to turn off the engine and wait for the BSI to go to sleep before normal service resumed

I've been exploring the Diagbox/Lexia maze of menu's and came across a list of "ECU's Present" which raised an eyebrow or two.

Audio CD Changer. I'm pretty sure I don't have one and it's not configured in other menu's that I know of.
Hands Free Kit. Again, I'm confident a Global Test always says NO to Dialogue and ? to Faults

And off-topic but also during that session I came across

"Main Supplies" list that stated Engine Operating Status - Coupe.

In the BSI configuration I found

Type of fuel filler cap presence detection - Missing which is odd because I have a fully functioning additive ECU with no faults and regenerations occur on average every 500+km.

plus a number of other oddities I'll save for another day.
