Thanks to all contributors enjoyed that, will give the selections a decent airing, turned up some good ones along the way. Nearly 100 years since his heyday in the 1920's the prolific Jelly Roll Morton is someone who I would have never come across without the assistance ouf our little piece of nonsense! I will put them up on the playlist now the task is completed.

So the last signatory to be selected was also quite remarkable,

Rutledge at 26 years old was the youngest signatory to the Declaration of Independance as part of the South Carolina delegation. In the "1776" musical and film, he was given a pivotal role and one of the most powerful and controversial songs in the story, (whether truly justified by the reality or not.) The American Declaration of Independance is also known for the omission of the following clause with respect to slavery from Thomas Jefferson's draft. Jefferson in his writings decades later blamed the removal of the passage on delegates from South Carolina and Georgia and Northern delegates who represented merchants who were at the time actively involved in the Trans-Atlantic slave trade. The song dramaticises that debate.

He has waged cruel war against human nature itself, violating its most sacred rights of life and liberty in the persons of a distant people who never offended him, captivating & carrying them into slavery in another hemisphere or to incur miserable death in their transportation thither. Determined to keep open a market where Men should be bought & sold, he has prostituted his negative for suppressing every legislative attempt to prohibit or restrain this execrable commerce. And that this assemblage of horrors might want no fact of distinguished die, he is now exciting those very people to rise in arms among us, and to purchase that liberty of which he has deprived them, by murdering the people on whom he has obtruded them: thus paying off former crimes committed again the Liberties of one people, with crimes which he urges them to commit against the lives of another.

I have had this album since it was released and treasure it.

I'm usually ambivalent about the words but this is euphoric.

Always considered Hejira to be the masterpiece for me Steve, although competing with a catalogue of excellence with her other work.

The lyrics are poetic, poignant and memorable.

Ended up having a "Beatles" night tonight, so I'll put up the final track on "The White Album" which is nice and relaxing for the end of the evening!

Its a John Lennon song, sung originally by Ringo Starr but no trace on youtube so I hand it over to Linda Ronstadt who does a good job of it.

I get so used to listening to music on the laptop and have to say this particular one does have better sound reproduction than most.
But today my sons have been away to Scotland, downhill racing.
Spent nearly all day cleaning as it is something I can't really do with son in ed (nightshift worker) but being able to have music on proper stereo's has been great.
Just had this on the best one:



Listening to it again on the laptop it sounds as though it is struggling to get out of a bean tin.

Really must try and get to The Sage again and listen to live music in a good auditorium

Never heard of him before but not a bad sound and another Canadian and a bit of "alternative Country" with a touch of steel guitar can't be bad. Not sure I can evict "Molasses and Rum" from the playlist to squeeze Justin in seeing as its an important dramatisation of part of the story of how the final form of the declaration of independance was arrived at.

Hadn't heard this for a while when it came on Simon Mayo's Radio 2 show tonight. Released as a single in 1967, but couldn't quite work out what "Grocer Jack" (which I mistakenly thought the track was called) had to do with "Opera" his theme for a selection of tracks in his show.



and on a Radio 2 DJ note, Simon Mayo's colleague "Wrighty", who can be a touch annoying, proves the point in 1982 by talking over Clannad.



Now I presume the singer is Enya's sister Maira (Moya) Brennan and would have probably preferred Wrighty to keep his gob shut.

Always like "Grocer Jack" but never seen Kieth West before. I wonder if there were plans for a complete 'Opera'?

Clannad certainly produced some very successful film/TV music, loved the Robin Hood one and of course Enya continues the tradition superbly.


(I know an even better rendition but will leave it at that)
Except to say that I did wonder why I didn't understand some of the words and realise now they were either elvish or Gaelic.

Harry's game made a deep impression and the music helped a lot.

Never actually seen them Clannad either.
