Amphibious C5 x7 ???

Unread post by petef »

Just opened and closed the rear door on my x7 Tourer. Heard a sloshing sound like getting out of the bath......Then noticed a very slight drip from the centre bottom of the door. Further investigation found two plastic patch hole covers on the door bottom. Peeling one of these half off released a deluge - I put a bucket underneath and collected over 2.5 litres of clean water. Ok it rains a lot in this neck of the woods - one of the wettest places in the UK, but it raises two questions.....

1) How does the water get in? - the bottom half of the door was full!!! Must be round the bottom window seal I suppose - no other way, but the seal seems sound. Can this be stopped?? And, no I haven't driven through any floods, although it did rain for about 48hrs Monday/Tuesday non stop.

2) How is the water supposed to get out if those plastic covers are in place? Or are they to stop water getting in from underneath? Don't see how water flows uphill. Probably best to remove the covers from all doors??

All the other doors are fine, Haven't dared try the electric window in the wet door - will wait for it to dry out a bit.

Just taken a look at mine, it's a saloon but I can't imagine it's much different.

As luck would have it, it's raining and you can see where the drain hole is toward the front of the door against the outer skin. I suspect yours are blocked.

Yes, they are not supposed to be blocked. Water gets in under the window seals and by design is supposed to exit via the drain holes at the bottom. I suspect they may have been covered up by somebody not realising this!

That's another reason why you should get some silicon spray (not standard WD40) and liberally spray into the window channels and raise and lower the windows copiously applying it. Not only will it help the windows glide properly and prolong the window motors, but will help coat the regulator wiring to repel any water from the regulator wires and help prevent these corroding.

I'd check all your drain holes are not blocked otherwise all that water sloshing about is not going to help the electronics. A new Window motor won't leave you much change out of £500 from Citroen - as I had to have the driver's one replaced recently.
Please note, I'm no longer active on the Forum, so won't respond to messages.

Thanks guys. When it stops raining I'll get out there and check that front drain hole.

The rear doors on my C5 used to fill up regularly to the extent that I kept a length of garden wire in the door to unblock the two drain holes in each door at regular intervals.
