Fully comp, protected NCD, and can drive another car. I normally specify 10k miles but Direct line don't seem to ask. I am a named driver on my wifes policy and vice versa. I think my postcode of DT6 6DF has got a lot to do with the price, it's in the middle of nowhere with a practically zero crime rate and about 30 miles to the nearest big town.

I can remember insuring a car for RTA (Road Traffic Act) cover only for £7 a year, those were the days!

I've just got my renewal in the post today from Hastings Direct. Was £233.04 last year (which I had to haggle over) and they want £279.65 this year (20% increase) which I consider unjustified. They'll get a call from me soon demanding a satifactory reduction or I'll shop elsewhere (again).

ETA: I just noticed this paragraph at the bottom of my renewal notice;

You have been with us for a number of years. You may be able to get the insurance cover you want at a better price if you shop around

Third party only is always ridiculous, but for me TPFT has always beaten comp. If only by a few quid, but with the car worth no more than a couple of hundred quid I'm never going to claim if at all possible because the rise in premium will be more than the payout.

In the end, insurers are in it to make money and will do whatever they reasonably can to make money. Can't really argue with that

TPF&T always used to be cheaper than fully comp. but, inexplicably, that doesn't seem to have been the case for some time now.

Statistically older drivers are very safe, although that's bound to change as they become ever more numerous.

Reason does not enter into it with insurance companies who will do absolutely anything to, at very least, delay paying any claim & if they do have to, they will ensure that it doesn't actually cost them anything in the end, unless you have the misfortune to be responsible for a fatality, a major pile up, destroing a house or, possibly, writing off someone else's Lambo, Bentley or similar.

Personal injury is a big cost The money paid out is staggering. I read a lot of cases where claims were well over £500,000. Some were involving cars and motorbikes. With operations loss of earnings ie, what a person would have earned in high paid jobs. The way it totalled up and was awarded took me by surprise. Surgeons and Consultants are at court regular in these cases.
