Jim, have you ever thought of writing a lifestyle book, to help extricate, or at least save, others from the fate you, apparently, narrowly escaped? Or, ironically, might that be too stressful?

Van, that's a good idea and if I thought it might help others in a similar situation then that would be excellent :)

I love writing, people and communicating so no stress there, it's just a case of finding time!!!

They'll never thaw out in time Alasdair! Fridge will be perfect ;)

I shall put the second bottle cage on today - later this morning in fact... Thanks for the reminder James :)

I agree. In my younger days summer cycling, I always took one very cold and one frozen bottle. That second one has to stay cold for 5 or more hours sometimes! It'll be well thawed if it's a warm day.

OK, we'll chill one and freeze the other but if I suffer dehydration as a result I'll sue you both ;)

Don't freeze it, thats not good for you anyway when exercising. Get a thermal bottle and use chilled water if temperature is an issue.

Good point James... Come to think of it, there has been some famous cases of riders becoming ill and having to abandon the TdF after drinking too-cold drinks...

Anyway, it's not a problem. It turns out I'll barely need two bottles anyway as frequent feeding stations are being provided - every 25 miles...

I'll not need to carry much food either as plenty will be available at the feeding stations...

William Evans, director of the Nutrition, Metabolism and Exercise Laboratory at the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences....

According to Evans, there are no adverse effects from drinking ice-cold water after exercising. He points out that cold fluids empty from the stomach faster than warm fluids, which means cold liquids work faster to replace fluids lost from perspiration. Drinking ice water after exercise, says Evans, can have an immediate effect on cooling the body’s core.

It's never done me any harm!

That's after.
During it takes much needed energy from the body and causes a decrease in performance. If you are pushing hard enough it can have prity dire consequences.
The science is all out there, I'm not going into it.
