405 Airbag warning light

Post by franco_cov »

Hi all,
Could someone please help me, over the past few weeks my red light on the steering wheel started to go on and off whilst steering and general driving, and then sometimes would not come on at all, well now the red light does not come on at all now and i have the yellow "airbag" light on the dashboard on now!!! what the hel is going on, the only thing I have done recently is jump start the car a few times and disconnected the battery to get my battery charged and put back on.... According to the haynes manual there is a certain procedure you follow to de-activate the airbag and one for re-activating it.... does that mean it may be an idea for me to de-activate it and then re-activate it as it may need reseting, as I have put the battery back on and then started engine straight again as normal... Please can some one help as I have no money to start giving loads to a peugeot dealer. however i have noticed two loose wires under my seat that have been there since i bought the car a year ago so dont know if they are to do with it however these have been disconnected before and the airbag was fine Please Please help mny thanks......

Can you tell us which red light it was that was coming on and staying on. To deactivate the airbag system all you need do is disconnect the battery and wait a couple of minute before working on it. When you reconnect, its advisable to turn on the ignition from outside the car, just in case the bag deploys. If the airbag light stays on, disconnect then reconnect the multiplugs under the seat. That might improve things. Probably you dont need to worry about the loose wires.

Thanks JohnD for replying,
On the steering wheel itself you have a red light on the right hand side of the steering wheel itself it normally lights up for 3 seconds when ignition turned then goes out to say everything ok i guess, but this is the light that has been going on and off for a week or so, then last night it stoped doing that and never comes on at all even on ignition, i just get the yellow warning on the dashboard with the words airbag! Its doing me head in now i have followed what the haynes manual said about disconnecting battery for 15 mins then turn on the ignition and the re connect the battery then turn ignition off and then back on and the red lights still dont come on and the yellow light is still there. The funny thing now is that there is a couple of other problems now, the inside courtesy light normally goes out strainght away when a door is closed whilst the engine is running NO not anymore it waits the usual time as if you get in the car with the ignition off ie 20 sec at a guess so the timings seem to be knackered, also the temp gauge does not register at all now even when the engine is warm as i put the heater blower on and it blows HOT air in but gauge not working, and to top ll that the fan starts the minute the engine goes and does not go off untill i turn the engine off and on a few occasions it starts again on its own free will for a short duration then goes off again (which I believe is normal ? ) but lets face it it is currently "0c" here and i dont think i need the fan to cut in yet, and i have checked the water level and no problems or leaks. PLEASE PLEASE HELP....... Cars are great things when the run well but when they dont I start to loose my hair, and quite frankly have not much of that or to come to think of it money.
So all help is greatly appreciated. Also do i have to disconnect the battery and de-activate the airbag before disconnecting and reconnecting those wires under the seat ?
Many thanks to all of your relies and help I am new to this forum and think its a wonderful way to share experiences and help us beat the large bills some garages and dealers charge us...... Once again thanks in advance.
Eagerly awaiting replies.

Never having had a 405, I'm not familiar with the dashboard layout. If the flickering red light you mention has a round symbol with an exclamation mark in it, that sounds as though it could be the brake pad sensor wire which is perhaps broken and causing an intermitant contact. If it is a broken wire it has maybe blown the fuse, hence it no longer lights up. Check through the fuse box and replace any blown ones. You don't need to disconnect the battery to check the airbag connections.

Cheers JohnD for your suggestions but I had to end up going to Peugeot and get diagnostic check on it and it turns out that the reason the light came on with regards to the Airbag is because the rotary switch which lies behind the steering wheel on top of the steering column is knackered and it basically means that the airbag will not operate until it is replaced quoted 70.00 for parts and labour which I must admit was a pleasant suprise not hundreds of pounds....... The other problem I have now though is the temp gauge on the dashboard does not work at all now even though the engine is hot and to top that both of my fans are constantly on whilst the engine is running. Peugeot wanted 52.00 an hour just to locate the problem.... Hmm dont think so... so took it to another garage who deal with secondhand parts etc for peugeots and rover well after an hour they replaced the 3 sensors on the thermostate housing and guess what still bloody running even when they disconnect the sensors which should!! stop the fans dont stop them so they are a bit baffled and have to check all the wiring so no doubt I will get the bill from them tomorrow (absolutley dreading it) but at least its only 25.00 an hour... Just hope they find it because i am going to burn out my fan motors driving it like that....... Will keep you posted, once gain thanks for your reply, as I have noticed a lot of people reading this topic but not replying, surely someone else has had this problem.... havent they ???
