Xantia HDi rev counter stuck on full deflection

Post by seedy »

There is another thread about this, but it's a bit old and the answer was a bit cruel.

My 2 litre HDi had this sticky rev counter problem a couple of times when I first got it. But now it doesn't want to correct itself. AFAIRecall, when it was working the needle used to twitch when the starter was operated, and those times when it stuck at full deflection, it was using the starter that kicked it back into life. But not this time.

Can anyone suggest how to resuscitate it without revving the (conrod) nuts off it?

A guy in France used a bent wire, fold in half and by pulling on one end or the other you can make the wire turn corners, he then got it to flick the needle.
If it is an S2 car, it is quite quick to remove the instrument pod, the glass bit unscrews and is removed easily after that.

If you can't easily get it to flick back, then it's probably easier just to whip the clocks out and turn it over. If it happens regularly on starting then I would check the +ve terminal on the battery, you will probably find it hot after starting - see the stick post at the top!

Mine does this when the battery is low, obviously at some stage in the past it had done so and the then owner drilled a small hole in the cover to allow you to put something in and flick it back, i used some welding wire with a bend to do it, took a few attempts mind! ;-)

Often they will spontaneously restore themselves to normal...

I have fixed one by pushing a piece of fine wire (old-fashioned telephone twisted pair) through the trip reset hole and feeding it across until it nudged the tachometer needle.
