DPF is for particulates - and they don't smoke on regen by design - if they are doing so then they are bust.... Never seen any smoke out of either of ours, and the tailpipe is still spotless. It should burn the trapped particles into CO2, so it's not just dumping it somewhere else; it's dumping something else somewhere else!

SCR is for NOX reduction - the Urea reacts with the NOX to reduce it back to nitrogen and oxygen. When the levels are decided for large industrial burners for upcoming legislation, many power stations will need to be fitted with SCR to reduce NOX levels; or converted to low NOX burners. Neither of which is particularly cheap....

I do not believe my C5 Mk1 has a DPF fitted. She does have an EGR system.

It has no DPF James, like mine. The 2.2 did though.

Will the much touted diesel car scrappage scheme get implemented before the general election on 8th June ? I doubt it somehow...

Doubt it - she won't want to risk upsetting anybody...

Has anyone any thoughts about how such a scappage scheme might affect numbers of "our cars" ?
The scrappage allowance could well exceed the value of the vehicle, in a good few cases.

Well, anybody who has the ability to read through very dull and boring paperwork might want to check the Conservative Manifesto paperwork when it is published. They might well find, in the small print on page 193, plans to raise the Vehicle Excise Duty on privately owned Diesel vehicles to £400, without any mention of a scrappage scheme. That way they get more money without having to pay any out.

£400 VED will make it hard for me to justify continuing running Gabriel :(

Ouch, even my V6 only costs about £250 VED a year. Zero for the Ion!

My erstwhile C1 is zero and a fact my daughter is very grateful for - that and the sheer economy of the thing!

Quite happy to pay that much for the Activa.. My Pug of Love is a little less and to be honest, if the planned £400 for old diesels comes about then the Pug of Love will very much come into her own...

I actually have no idea if there is going to be an increase in VED on diesels, I was just commenting on how political parties try to slide things in on the sly.

James, it would not surprise me in the least to be honest if they did... They seem desperately keen to show they mean business with allegedly 'dirty diesels' by mooting a new scrappage scheme so for those of us that will not buy shiny new cars as a result then a massive hike in VED seems entirely plausible to put an end to the killer cars we drive...

I heard someone pontificating about it on the wireless today - honestly how the talk went driving an old diesel was somehow instantly lethal to the general population... Hype and spin were well in evidence...

With views like that I feel it is only a matter of time but then today's announcement may have given us all a bit of breathing space as what some may regard as more important matters take over...

There is no 'planned £400' Jim.

Be prepared for a lot more of that.............there's an election coming and unlike the USA's two years of mudslinging they've only got seven weeks here to spin.

I think we are soon to witness spin at top speed as they all spin themselves into a mad frenzy... We live in jolly interesting times and that is my very last word on the subject before I get into grief with the admins

I can already feel my internal gyroscopes spinning up hard to try and counterbalance that which will be coming from the various political parties.
