Marc,

That reminds me of a true story about traffic police working on the M5 or M4. They were asked to attend a obstruction on the outside lane of the motorway to find a coffin lying on the road (fully laden). A hearse had been delayed on route to the deceased's home address and the coffin had fallen out of the car.
I believe the hearse was doing more than 30 mph!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Looks somewhat like the CX Safari I carried TVs about in for years - so would be appropriate

Interesting, because traditionally, the French were far more practical than most, so had limo based ambulances & commercial based hearses.

Mercs Jim?
The only ones I've seen round here are Volvos and stretched Ford Mondeos :spit:

I posted this a year or two back, French GP Dijon Prenois 198??, the famous Villeneuve/Armoux* battle, lucky to be there.

Less lucky was the F3 driver who had to be scooped up by the track ambulance, but at least he had a comfy ride.

* people forget it was a battle for 2nd, race was won by Jarier making it the first modern era win for a turbo charged car, essentially the choice was 3.0l naturally aspirated or 1.6?? 1.5?? turbo. Beginning of the end for the Ferrari flat 12s and the V8 Cosworth DFV variants

Anyway, back to plot, when I go I would quite like to be carried off in the back of a DS or CX Safari, any colour will do. Suppose second choice would be on the roof bars of any properly suspended Citroen. ("The engine was started and he rose up...... :) ")

We use Jag -wahs, yup, even down on the English Riviera!

Volvo's are a better shape - or were - but they're not really "carriage trade" (nor were Fairlane station wagons but they WERE cheap, being big enough to only require an interior refit & a lick of of black paint - & no one here knew just how budget they were!).

Mercs fell out of favour with the advent of electronics - because after they'd been stretched the rear lights wouldn't work: MB quoted £3,000 (how long ago was it?) just to fly a technician out to do the diagnostics! For a while it was cheaper to buy a 2nd-hand Wraith, Spur or similar & cut that up, even allowing for refurbing it to RR standards.

Me, I'm going in a Cadillac, even if I have to buy it myself. Fortunately my son understands - AND he has a backgarden providing parking for 9 (albeit, normal) cars.

There were some CX hearses in Holland, I don't know what the French funeral trade replaced their H-vans with, 6 wheeled C15's perhaps?

A CX ambulance makes wonderful sense!

I wish I was in one last time I got carted off to A and E. he hideous thing I was in was a right old boneshaker

Comfortable it was not. It must have been bad as I was barely conscious but I noticed the terrible ride of the thing!!!

Those were the good times. Loving that CX stretch and I think I saw a few XM conversions too over the years.

I think I remenber seeing a CX ambulance in the U.K. on one of the Hammer House of Horror TV episodes were the journalist goes to a fat farm. They were taking bodies away in one!
