ON the BBC 6 O'clock news there was an article about steam locomotive 'Tornado'. Recently (very early this morning, in fact) she was taken out late at night, and managed to hit 100MPH. 'Tornado' is currently restricted to speeds of 75MPH, but it is hoped that this test will go towards allowing her to travel at 90MPH.

Re: Regular Steam Service?
Excellent news! This has been a hot topic in the steam world for some time now and with it comes the hope of lots of 'plandampf' - German for regular scheduled steam services - and especially after the recent very successful scheduled stem runs on the Settle and Carlisle

Re: Regular Steam Service?
I think they run a fairly regular steam service on the Settle to Carlisle line now.

Sorry Jim, didn't read you post properly - again.
Apparently Michael Portillo had a hand in saving that line, it was the subject of one of his Great Railway Journeys programs a little while back.

He did and but for him it would have closed for sure... It came bloody close...
Now it truly is the jewel in the crown and that was amply demonstrated by NR spending countless millions on it to resolve the winter landslip problem that closed it for a few months.
It very recently re-opened with much steam and fanfare
