C5 CV boot query

Unread post by milleplod »

Afternoon all.

Did an oil and filter on my '09 2.0HDi auto this morning, spotted that the o/s outer CV boot is split open. Is the correct Citroen part number 3293E8, does anyone know? And do manual ones differ from auto ones? There's what seems like dozens of different ones listed! :?

I can't advise as to the part number for correct boot, but you might like to consider one of the universal stretch boots. I started using these a couple of years ago as they save a fair amount of work when replacing the boot. They can be do in situ just by removing the outer end of the driveshaft from the hub which, if nothing else, saves losing the gearbox oil.

I have used the below outfit who trade on ebay a number of times and their stretch boots seem good quality. I last changed a boot with one of theirs a couple of years ago (about 100K miles) and it is still going strong.

Personally, I couldn't be bothered, given that you can get a driveshaft for not much more than the cost of 2 boots BUT, I never realised you could fit them in situ: it looked like a bench/vice job to me!

I had to take mine to the bench with the stretchy boot. I only had the cone for the job, not the bellows. It is a faff...........horrible job.

It can be done in situ even with a cone, although it is a bit tricky.

I'm sure that there was a recent thread on this forum concerning this topic. I modified my cone slightly by glueing a 15 cm length of cylindrical drain pipe onto the wide end if the cone (the drain pipe having roughly the same diameter as the wide end of the cone). This allows you to stretch the boot onto the drain pipe section of the cone away from the car, say on the ground, which is relatively easy. The stretch boot will quite happily sit on the drain pipe section without any need to hold it there. You can then offer the cone up to the driveshaft, so that the drainpipe section sits over the joint in the usual way, and slide the boot off.

Then there's the inner, because unless it was accidental damage to the outer, that has now got a limited life, so it makes no sense not to do them both at the same time.
