Xantia door check stop?!

Unread post by HDI »

I need to replace the drivers door check stop/strap/slider.. on my Xantia II as the one on the car clicks badly. Had a quick look on the donor car and it looks really awkward, is that the case or is there a method I can't see?

To change door check stop you have to remove door trim panel. Unscrew it and pull it through the door

I've had a bash at this on my scrap activa and its a real pita. Getting that door stay back into the door is a nightmare, i gave up! If you manage it drop me a line on how.

So, another Citroen grief job then! Examination on the donor vehicle revealed the potential for struggle! The clicking sound every time I open the door is annoying the hell out of me though, so I will persevere! I think I might have an idea involving a piece of string though!
Thanks guys.
BTW, the stay in those pictures looks horrendous!

I wonder if a can of 3 in 1 oil might help here? You can normally get a small spray can from Poundland. NOT WD40!!!

I regularly use spray grease on all hinges and stuff like this but this isn't a lubrication issue, something has either worn or broken on the stay assembly.

What is actually clicking though? On a lot of French check straps the click is down to the pivot pin having worn in the part that hinges off the A pillar. Not sure of the buildup on the Xantia as I never looked but on 205/309 etc replacement pins were available.

EDIT- just looked at the link & it's a different design, like the XM too (seems the actual bracket fatigues from those pics & experience of the broken one on our XM). I suppose if the bracket itself is OK but the pin/hole are worn you could knock/drill/grind out the pin and fit either a close fitting bolt/nut or turn up a new pin that's a better fit. Would save pulling the door apart if it's the pin that's clicking.

They do click when they are dry - not sure on the the why, but it's worth introducing some lubricant to it to see if it improves.

Unfortunately it's not the pin on the A pillar, or a matter of lubrication as I've already sprayed grease onto everything. I suspect something has broken on the parts inside the door. The other doors are fine, so it is a problem on the drivers door.

I'm of the opinion on my well worn 300k machine that the clicking is coming from the well worn hinge. If I open the door and lift it, theres enough play to cause the hinge, or one of them, to click.
It's annoying when accelerating or decelerating but I've tried replacement pins and loads of grease, that stops it for a short while.
I think the only way of stopping it would be to drill out the hinge on the car and fit a tight collar inside.

Wonder if chemical metal would be a potential solution? I've had good results using it on the ZX fuel pump when I accidentally knocked the governor screw off while dearmouring it! IIRC it was a Plastic Padding brand I used & it was fully machinable once cured, so one could fill & drill to fit a new pin or simply "glue" the existing hinge pin in place if it didn't look like snapping.

Or perhaps there's scope for a grub screw to be fitted at 90* to the actual hinge pin, that could be wound in to bear against the pin & take up any play? (Fords use a variation on this, and I've not had trouble with loose hinges on those)

Always worth checking that the nuts holding the check stop in the door haven't just come loose!

I've extracted a good door stay assembly from the donor vehicle, it's a very awkward job and quite a complex mechanism! Apart from removing the obvious stuff, like the door card, electricals, wiring mounts etc, etc, the trick to getting the stop assembly out, is removing the front window glass guide. Even then it's quite a wriggle! From looking at it, I reckon one of the springs has broken on the clicking one! Now all I need is a few hours spare to install it!
