Which type of oil is better for 406 1.8 16V (XU7JP4 LFY)?

Total Quartz 7000 10W-40 Synthetic Based - API SL

the 5W-40 will perform better in colder climates. The 10W will be better in warmer climes.

I live in an area in which the outside temperature varies between 0-40 °C depending on the season. Temperature rarely goes below zero here.
As you know XU7JP4 was fitted to some PSA cars from 1995 - 2001.
I read somewhere that Synthetic oils are suitable for modern late-model engines with tight tolerances and if you use it in older engines it doesn't lubricate them well and will damage the piston rings and cylinder walls.
This is why I asked the question to make sure about the right type of oil to use in my car.
What kind of oil is recommended by PSA for this car?
Up to know, I have been using Total 7000 10W-40 in it and didn't have any issues but I was recommended to switch to Total 9000 because this engine has hydraulic valve lifters and it performs better with 5W-40.
So, what's your opinion?
