C15D engine noise

been running the van now for two weeks without problems (starting and fuel problems solved)This morning started up and used the van for 3-4 miles then as I accelerated away an awful noise came from the engine which sounded like my ladder had fallen off the top. pulled over to the side with the engine still running but with a loud ticking noise. Turned off the engine checked everything i could think off but with no result. The engine restarted no probs but still with loud ticking noise had to drive it 'cause on a london red route. there is no power under acceleration, no black or white smoke from exhaust, engine is breathing normally, plenty of water free fuel , plenty of oil, no overheating. Told it was'nt the timing??. Removed the cam cover and turned cam manualy it seems to be sticking as it compresses the exhust? valve on 3rd cylinder although the valves all go down under manual pressure. Does any one have any ideas what has gone wrong.

Are all the valve springs still intact?

the head is coming off on monday so i will let you know after that
(could it be a piston ring off and sitting on top of the piston?)
