Interesting, we brought the grandson home, backed onto the drive and the revs fluctuated up and down and settled at 950rpm. Its the first time its been that low for a few days. Something sticking or failing?

So here are some pics. The throttle cable might be a tad tight actually. I'll knock it back a notch when it cools down. Coming home the rpm crept up to 1000 but then dropped back again. However Its not the most user friendly pump location to take pics.

Taking our poorly grandson home to mommy and daddy today I noticed the revs fluctuating again. He is staying at home tomorrow as mommy has got a few days off work so providing the weather is ok I'll pop out and ease the throttle cable by a couple of slots.

Dave, what's on the other end of the Bowden cable that goes to the fast idle lever on the back of the pump?

I'm not sure Jim. I couldn't see down the back of the pump I just held my phone there and clicked away. It really is tucked under the scuttle. If it stops persisting down I'll have another look later and see if I can trace it through. It disappears off into the gloom somewhere near the clutch housing.

If it is remote from the thermostat housing Dave, and has no coolant near it then that is a vacuum capsule. Does it have a black rubber pipe on the opposite side of it?

If yes then it's the same sort of vacuum system as on the later 1.9TD Xantias and I know all about those ;)

I can't see the opposite side of it Jim it is ridiculously obscured. It is somewhere behind the header tank. But it may very well be vacuum operated as its not too far from the vacuum pump.

I think if I remove the header tank and what I think is the intercooler-turbo airpipe I may get access. Looking from the front into the engine bay it's to the right of centre but left of the battery, sort of above the bellhousing but obviously bolted right at the back on the bulkhead. Strangely today tickover has been steady at 950rpm, yesterday it was hunting slightly to just over 1000rpm and before that stuck on1100rpm for a few days. Most puzzling and most annoying, I don't like racing tickover's except on warm up. On the Bx a cold start would put the engine straight onto 2000+rpm which I thought was ridiculous. After stripping and cleaning the carb I pulled that down to about 1400rpm which is plenty in my opinion, especially on an auto as when I put it into gear it wanted to take off! Very disconcerting.

I have also been investigating the annoying left pull on the steering. Today after doing a few miles round and about I felt the hubs. The two nearside were warm and the two offside were quite cold so as soon as we get a bit of warmer dryer brighter weather I will strip and clean the pads and calipers.

Aaand, I've noticed a bit of black smoke on brisk acceleration lately so have been trying to keep it gentle. I think I need a new aircleaner anyway and I'm fairly certain Richard said it was due a service. I'll pick up a couple of filters over the weekend ready. Today we had a drive out to a local (ish) farmshop about 10-15 miles away so when the road was clear I gave it the beans in 2nd and 3rd. Result, smoke gone, so it must have been sooting up a bit with all the short runs. When it gets on the turbo around 2500-3500rpm it really is very sweet with that satisfying "kick". :)
