ECP, or at least their on-line operation, is fine BUT you do have to pick your brands. Especially it's wise to exercise caution with their recommended brands because, at least when it comes to filters, they're their in-house brand.

Then again, I was brought up on pattern parts, mainly QH, & don't remember any particular problems.

QH were always fine as was most pattern parts back along... We didn't the seem to have the problem of rampant counterfeiting and outright poor quality that seems to happen today...

Maybe that's what it is - or is it another variation on the childhood summers were long & sunny, I remember when Wagonwheels were TH-I-S big, thing?

Just in case anyone's still interested in my tale of woe, a little positive upturn: Saturday - picked up new starter (curiously the one that X-referenced the No: on the old one was the wrong one - just as well I didn't get it mail order) cost me an extra £12 but a reasonable price for the avoiding the logistical difficulties. Sunday - dragged it back to London on the train (it's case is a little smaller - & I didn't have my laptop - so not as heavy a load as Friday) last evening - fitted it (took longer than should have mainly 'cos I couldn't find things I'd left under the bonnet - or thought I had); tried it as soon as connected, just to see if it'd spin over - & the damn thing started! So, at least I was right, it WAS the starter, not the battery but still gutted because it was my own stupid fault that I fried a perfectly good, relatively new gennie Valeo unit - & after all that I couldn't pump up the tyre 'cos either my much vaunted Lidl electric pump's failed OR I have a puncture. Oh the irony of it all!
Tonight, all being well, will try to replace the drive shaft.

It's a pity I hadn't read this thread sooner. I'm currently breaking a c15 which has a good starter on it.

Thought about that (as we'd been in touch elsewhere) but thought that what with the postage (although then thinking price would be about £12 less than I finally paid) AND the time factor, decided it wasn't a realistic option.

Still want all that stuff I was hoping to get over Christmas - & hoping to get up there while you've still got it. I'll knock up a "wish list" which perhaps you could price.

Jim, thanks for your continuing support/encouragement. Sadly little progress last evening as it was 9 o' clock before I could shunt the van back to get the n/s wheel by the dropped curb, for better access (oh the joys of working in the street!) & decided that was really too late to start on replacing a driveshaft. If the weather holds, shouldn't be too bad as have already cracked the hub nut AND the shaft was out only a tear ago (to replace the hub carrier & one boot).

So, driveshaft done, just got to torque the hub nut - & replace the gearbox oil, tonight.

MoT booked for midday Saturday, which gives me the morning to replace the exhaust tailbox, & get at least one tyre fitted.

Means driving down to Devon Friday night, even though I've got a train ticket (for which I MIGHT be able to get a refund. although GWR are really bad at such things) BUT if I'm doing the exhaust I can't be wondering across Dartmoor in the Jeep - & the fuel saved will probably be more than cost of the ticket (+ the Moor'll still be there the following w/e :-D)

Excellent work, well done, especially in the prevailing weather at the moment!

Possibly the best way of getting a refund out of GWR is to take a train you know is going to be massively delayed - They then have a duty to refund you I believe ;)

Thanks Jim,

Wasn't too bad a job, except I struggled a bit getting the bottom swivel clear of the hub carrier (bit concerned about how floppy it was, adding a dimension to re-assembly, given the t-c-a's only about a yr old, though).
I called it a night on Wednesday 'cos steady drizzle has set in AND I really needed to get the hypoid warm before topping up the 'box.
Anyway all done now, so wish me luck escaping the fun factory at a reasonable time this evening - & thrashing it down to Devon tonight (at least the wind's abated!).

Excellent run down to Devon last night AND now have MoT - yesssssss! (a few advisories, one of which was the tyre that really deserved to fail, but only gearbox leak might be a concern). Not without a few trials & tribulations, has to be said, but also a smattering of good luck (won't go into all the details, as conscious this in danger of of morphing into a blog).

Van'll have to stay down here, so can get other tyre done & tracking, at very least, checked. No great hardship, as during the Winter, most weeks it only goes to Lidl's one evening [but that might stop if they don't get their act together & open more than one checkout. (Reminds me, knock off letter of complaint - just in case they try to charge me for using carpark without buying anything)].

Well done!

Always seems to be easier once you've got the vehicle mobile to get details sorted.

At least I'll know who to come to here once I end up with a Cherokee in the drive.

C15 is a cracking little van though. We used to have one at work, never failed to surprise me what you could fit in the back, and to what level it could be broken but still working. Do remember that the brakes were shall we say, somewhat lacking, especially when heavily (probably over) loaded...Or was that just our one?

Not the worst brakes I've come across mind you, that honour falls to the Leyland Leopard that I very nearly inserted into the Kintore roundabout at the bottom of the hill one evening. I still don't know quite how I managed to get that thing round it...But it must have looked impressive for any onlookers. I should point out as well that A: back then I was significantly younger and more stupid than I am now, and B: that this was shuffling a vehicle having body restoration work done around and no passengers were involved.

Thank you both, sort of makes me feel one of the family now (Hmmmm, better getter sticker) - & I was already feeling good as I thought I could justafiably wear my "Vive le Mechanique" T-shirt again, after feeling a bit of a fraud for letting the cambelt beat me.

Cherokees? Wouldn't say they're my specialist subject but I've been driving one for the last, maybe 6 yrs, & still have all 3 (well, 2 + most of the 1st one - you know how it is!). Yes, of course, only too pleased to share what i've learned.

Never known anyone have a bad word to say about C15's & a surprising number of people with no personal knowledge of them are complimentary. I'm really glad that after a long search, I decided I didn't actually want a Berlingo - & a lot of people in the trade say I made the right choice (including the MoT man today, who seems to have a yard full of local tradesmen's more modern vans, all awaiting £100's worth of work).
I keep hearing/reading about this brake issue & I always leap to their defence because mine are really good - but I think you might've hit the nail on the head with the observations about being when laden, which mine never is. Then again, mine's a very late one so has different front brakes which may be better +, I don't keep hearing about how poor Pug 205 brakes are - & I believe they're the same.
