As I was pulling up to park I pressed the lowest suspension setting to make unloading the boot a touch easier. Don't recall whether it did or not though. Fast forward an hour and I'm reversing off the drive and realise it's picking up every bump, so I flick the switch to raise the car only nothing happens. Warning light comes on and says suspension faulty. Switched car off and on again but no change, just says max speed 55mph and service light came on. Drove a couple of miles home and unloaded the kids and the car started raising up to its highest position. Started it back up and error message had disappeared so too it for a spin and all seemed fine.
Anyone else had a phantom problem like this before?

It's part of the height corrector. You'll find the rear one in the middle of the rear axle. A distinctive dog bone shaped connector. These can rust and seize and this will affect the height correction info. Give them a good lube and then raise and lower the suspension a few times to work the lube into the connectors. The front one is near the front passenger side, somewhere near the steering rack IIRC.

about a £10 note.

Connected to the rear anti roll bar. It "pops" off.
Use a LOT penetrating oil (not wd40) on the sensor and very carefully work it back and forwards cleaning as you do this. I finished with a spray white grease to help protect it. I also painted the new one.
Do this with the car supported (not a jack) and the battery disconnected.
Follow the BSI reset procedure when reconnecting the battery.

For some reason this area/these components are not well protected against corrosion as you can see, mine is all now cleaned, painted and waxed.
Whilst under the rear, inspect the Anti-Roll bar and see if the plastic coating is breaking up, if it is clean it up and paint/wax the roll bar next to the bushes.

Remember: Do NOT undo the clamp on the roll bar, also it may also be the sensor that has failed or just dirty/other problems.

As you know I've only just bought it and it came with zero paper work so can't comment servicing or lack of it. Sensor faults etc will need a LEXIA system to diagnose correctly, standard code readers will fail or give false readings remember.
