Xantia Coolant Change

Getting ready to do a coolant change on my 93 Xantia 1.9 TD and consulting my Haynes manual it says there are a number of bleed screws that need to be opened, the only one I can find is the one arrowed .

You may find one on the heater matrix flow pipe too... For the life of me I can't exactly recall now and it's still too dark to look under Gabriel's bonnet!

Generally and in my experience, the only one you need to deal with is the one you've arrowed and I can't recall consciously opening others... I refill with the arrowed bleeder open and leave it so until the system is full and the expansion tank is full to the brim. I squeeze the top hose to expel any air and the start up and squeeze the top hose again repeatedly...

I do that until coolant issues from the arrowed bleeder and then I close it... leave the engine idling and check the heater is getting warm - proving coolant is circulating around it.

Then keep squeezing the top hose at intervals until the 'stat opens and keep topping up as need be...

Once the 'stat is open, bleed again at the arrowed bleeder. Run until the cooling fans cut in and then out again. Check for a nice evenly warm rad...

Don't replace the expansion tank cap until the system has cooled right down again and then top up if needed.

Check the coolant level every day for a week and top up if need be.

Be careful oft he bleeder - the plastic is quite delicate.

Also, be sure of no big air-locks by ensuring the heater starts working very quickly and the temperature gauge never goes sky-high during the warm-up! Lots of top hose squeezing is good for dislodging big air-locks in my experience...

None on the rad... May be one near the thermostat but unlikely to have been opened for years and actually, as I said above no need to...

Trying to open bleeders that have not been touched for ages can result in a whole world of pain

Just checked Gabriel and the only bleeder is the one you arrowed Kiwi... There is none on the rad and none on the head near the thermostat housing...

Yes, confirmed on Gabriel Mike.... She's a very late 1.9TD though... But as long as you have the bleeder that's arrowed in the picture then that is the only one you need worry about...

Very early S1s may be a bit different and may have a bleeder by the thermostat housing but I'm not sure/can't remember now... Maybe someone with an early 1.9TD can take a look...

It is indeed - for the 2.0HDi engine at least.

Odd that both were deleted on later 1.9TDs... Without any apparent detriment...

The one on the heater matrix pipe can be very dodgy if not opened on regular occasions... The Activa has one of those and they are best left well alone...

94td here, might have 3 but only know of two, the eater matrix elbow which is a pig to reach and the one near the cambelt cover. I only used those two and it bled fine. Tried a higher expansion tank and just got coolant everywhere!

So when you say heater " matrix " are you referring to what we call the heater " core " ? ( as in radiator core )
