Nope, there's no need of any washers or any other sorts of seals on those big pipes - they go off to the strut tops... They should never leak when correctly installed and the 17mm union correctly nipped up. Tight but not too tight...

I would check to see that a washer had not already been fitted, rotted (as normal rubber does not appreciate being in contact with LHM) and then allowed the leak to occur.

But jim say's that they don't have a washer on these. So I'm confused why it had leaked. Does over tightening cause this.

Yes, over-tightening could cause it but I'd more likely suspect a hair-line split or crack in the end of the pipe around the flare...

Seen it before on these sorts of unions... Especially those 'twixt pump and pressure regulator... It may not be very obvious to the naked eye...

If it is a split/crack, you'll be able to effect a satisfactory repair by brazing...

Please accept my apologies if I caused any confusion. I know that Jim said there should NOT be a washer there. However, while Jim knows this, did a previous owner know this as well? On my previous car I found a slight leak from the anti sink sphere. Upon investigation I found the remnants of a normal O ring on the pipe. As this was not of the right material it had failed, and caused the leak. The seal that should have been in there was a 4.5mm LHM tube seal.

Sometimes a little knowledge is a lot more dangerous than no knowledge. That is why, before I do anything complex to a car I will check out what the procedures are.

James, no need of any apologies... I've seen where unions that need none, seals have been fitted in error with consequent ramifications because, as you say:

So looks like i may need a new pipe as i don't have facilities to do this brazing. And i will assume that getting it done will not be cheap. Going to look around local scrap yards. If all else fails will one of these pipes be suitable from one of the Activae i have.

The housing wouldn't be damaged from over tightening would it as it is cast.

Could be the housing... Close investigation is needed...

Yes, Activa pipes will do but they're a %&%596 to swap...

The hydractive sphere block, in my experience, is vulnerable to being clobbered when swapping engines.. Do you recall any such events happening at the time you lifted the engine out?

They were all taken out prior to engine been removed.

Do you mean the hydractive sphere block was completely removed before the engines were swapped over?
