Tyres (again!)

I also have a set of the Michelin Cross Climates they are really good tyres, certainly get what you pay for.

I have had the Cross Climates on for about a week now and find them quiet and grippy. I think part of the problem with the Goodyears may have been going for the 93 rating rather than the 97. The car feels more stable going into bends. I will stick to the higher rating in future, despite most tyre sites saying the 93 was suitable on premium brands.

The number is the load rating, not a wise thing to be skimping on and the correct one will be on the sticker with the tyre sizes. The higher the number the stiffer and stronger the walls of the tyre are, this usually translates into better but bumpier handling.

I collected our 'new' Grand C4 Picasso on the Thursday before Christmas - from Plymouth with half of the 165 mile 'delivery trip' in the dark. One way to get to know a new car. Disappointed with the tyre-roar on some surfaces of the M5. However, subsequent investigation into the 4 different tyres fitted revealed the reason: the Nexen N Blue eco on the NSF is rated at 74dB, the others at 71dB and 68dB (x2). 74dB is about as noisy as tyres get - more than twice as loud as the Goodyear Ultragrip winter tyres on the Xantia (67dB). Unfortunately, all the Picasso's tyres have lots of life left in them - noise rating comes second only after wet grip on my list of criteria when buying tyres. Price is a factor but by shopping around, I've never had to compromise unduly.

If I were you I would get matching tyres on each axle a bit quick! Having different tyres can cause issues with ABS / ESP systems - especially with automatics, but will not help with braking given each tread has a different pattern and braking characteristics!

Aye 74 is supposed to be really loud but i'm buggered if I can tell. The wifes are even louder!

B74dB is the noisiest tyre rating I've seen (for 15" and 16" car tyres) and 67dB the quietest. 74dB is twice as loud as 67dB.

I couldn't agree more. I'm planning to replace the noisy Nexen and one other (possibly the Yokohama Blue Earth A - [C A 71]) with a pair of quiet, grippy, tyres on the front ASAP.
