That's good Peter :D I suppose it all boils down to the fact that we all see things in our own way... It's always been one of life's great questions - does everyone see colours in the same way? Is my perception of blue, say, the same as yours or anyone else’s for instance?

I doubt it is, otherwise everyone would have the same favourite colour and that would make the world very tedious...

....The Pickled Egg Library...the perfect place for pondering such matters....I was thinking similar thoughts earlier today when I read Peter's posts :-D :!:

If we had a different set of senses and sensors, our interpretation of our world and the universe would be quite different!

I can see the PE Library hosting meetings of a very learned group of people to discuss and debate many deep questions... A sort of alternative Royal Society... The FCF Society!

Members would be FFCFS - Fellows of the FCF Society ;)

Really thought-provoking, that brief exchange between Peter and Jim about colour sensitivity.
In one sense, we're all blind to many kinds of radiation, outside what we normally call the 'visible spectrum', and I'm not sure how we'd cope if we weren't.
I think the experience of beauty is just enjoying and appreciating what you are able to see, hear, touch... And as some senses dull, or are absent, others can become more sensitive to compensate.
Braille readers can still enjoy a good book, and under the bedclothes too.

I am playing a Space Flight simulator game a lot. One of the things the developers have done is to add a LOT of sound (not noise, but sound, and not loud). People have complained that there is no sound in space. The developers have explained this by saying the ships can 'hear' a lot of different 'noises' through their myriad of sensors, but then generate sound (with accurate placement) so we poor deaf and blind blobs of living matter can tell what and where things are. I can now, to a reasonable degree, tell what type of ship has just flown past me even if I don't see it.

When it's your time to give a presentation in front of The FFCF Society, what's your specialist subject going to be Jim ? Old wireless's you've known and loved ? Approved bodges and fixes to Xantias over the last 20 years ? Or something else ?

I like that Alasdair

Bobins, I could talk for a long, long time on those two subjects and I'd definitely need to cook a big batch of flapjacks and other assorted bakery items to feed the audience during the mid-presentation break...

I would actually enjoy doing such a presentation ;) I'm definitely not short of material!

Over on "Picture of the Day" today there's a couple of pictures of the embryonic oil industry in the USA, and its use of the original "barrels" of oil, barges, railroad, and horse drawn wagons. Down the side links to other stories. Amongst others this captured my interest...Roughnecks of Sherwood Forest.

So here is the article duly deposited in the PE Library.

http://aoghs.org/petroleum-in-war/rough ... od-forest/

There is also a book about it. "The Secret of Sherwood Forest" Oil Production in England during World War II by Guy H Woodward and Grace Steel Woodward.

Oh wow :D Now that is a book I must read... Just what I thoroughly enjoy and goes perfectly with my current interest in the more obscure and unusual aspects of WWII history...

An excellent addition Neil :D

Thats one of the questions that set me off studying Optometry Jim. I actually perceive colour differently in each eye as I have different pupil sizes. I'm convinced we do all see colour differently but not to the extent that my Blue could be someone else's Green.

My two eyes have slightly different colour rendering James... I always put that down to an accident with brake fluid many years ago and a rush to casualty as a result...

Do most people have slightly different rendering between eyes?

I will do a straw poll around my friends and see if any of those notice a difference... This is interesting stuff :)

If I can find it, big if,. I'll donate a colour vision thresholds book and you can test what's measured against their word. It rarely adds up, showing what an oddity perception can be.
