It is therapeutic and rewarding - just so long as you don't go in for multiples!

Personally, I agree with with the consensus here. Plus it gives you another hobby..............old chain saws

Re: Tired of being cold - solved
I ran a McCulloch two-stroke chainsaw for several years. Chains blunted, so I bought an electric chain sharpener. Ok, but a lot of work. Then I discovered tungsten carbide tipped chains (Stihl micro variety), which can be bought here for about €8 each, off-the-reel, and made up to length. One of these can last for massive quantities of cutting, and will whistle through hard olive and almond. Have now abandoned the McCulloch, which became more and more temperamental, and bought a Bosch 14" electric, 1900W motor. What a fabulous tool!

If you buy Oregon chains, they have witness marks engraved on them showing the correct angle to sharpen. I've been using chainsaws for 20-odd years now....... I like Oregon chains

I fancy that Bosch leccy job for cutting wood around the garage. I have a little Sachs Dolmar 2 stroke. It even goes in the boat with me.

Wood-burners - been there, done that. Now we have one that's
gas-fired. Real flames Jim and really looks the part. Runs for 12 months without needing to open the doors (and then it's the service engineer), no sawing or chopping, no baskets of wood to haul up from the cellar and no dust from the ash. And it can chuck out 6½ kW
if it gets really cold.

Re: Tired of being cold - solved
Its all a matter of personal opinion really.
Sometime you save money - ie: free wood for your fire from some source or other....
Sometimes you feel like you save money - ie: you chop the wood yourself - but pay for petrol , oil , chains etc
Sometimes you pay - gas etc.
Personally, we like to kid ourselves that we save, at least it gives us a buzz,,,,,
We live in the land of wood, When we came here 10 years ago the typical stereotype was....Breton bloke, Citroen C15 van, 2 hunt dogs in the back and a STIHL chainsaw - call to the friends and have 2 Ricard on each stop.
Now its
Breton Bloke, Berlingo or Partner van , sons or daughters of original hunt dogs, SAME Stihl chainsaw , still 2 Ricards.
We have always found McCulloch to be a great "middle market" chainsaw. They are the same company as Husqvarna and Jonsered. We run 5 chainsaws, mostly broken ones donated to us which worked fine after piston and carb kit. Different sizes for different jobs , from roofing to log cutting to tree-felling.
Yes , its absolutely true , having a wood-burner is a great excuse to get into another hobby - chainsaws and tree-felling....

Re: Tired of being cold - solved
When I lived in Scotland (Peebleshire), and my Grandfather was away for a while, Mum and a few friends went over to help Rosalie (Mums' step Mother). There was a nice pine wood not too far away. They had permission to gather any dead wood (for firewood). Mum looked at a pine tree (it was not very tall), and thought it was dead. When she pushed it hard it fell over. Later, when we back at Rosalie's home, Bill said something like "Jenny pushed a tree down". Rosalie's eyebrows went a very long way up. "Mind you, I think it was a bit sick" he finished.

Re: Tired of being cold - solved
Wicked looking Landrover - we are just repairing the bulkhead on our one - yours has that problem solved permanently it appears !!!!
We live in the land of oak here - in fact they are a real nuisance - about 30,000 trying to sprout at the sides of the roads around here - its a permanent job for the commune to keep them down.
Still , only a chainsaw will take down an oak about 80cm diameter...........
As another poster said - wood keeps you warm 4 times....

Re: Tired of being cold - solved
I think those newer and smaller McCulloch are made by Poulan in the states. They are not as good as the old ones. Same group company but nothing like Husky's. I bought a small McCulloch new and it had the Husky logo etc. It was so bad that I got a refund right away. I have older Sachs Dolmar and it is a rugged little thing.

Re: Tired of being cold - solved
I can remember when I had an open fire & burnt anything I could find (mainly pallets & dumped furniture) which I cut up with a chainsaw, 'til the neighbours complained. Perhaps because this was often late in the evening - in the cellar! Nowadays I rather suspect the local constabulary would become involved.
