Hi Jim, why don't you build one - against an outside wall ?

I had thought the same. All you need for one of these fires is a stainless flexi-flue, 5" minimum. If you've got an outside wall, you should be in business.

First 1m of flue above the fire should be vitreous or rigid stainless, and can then become flexible, using a diameter reducer as appropriate. Any angles/turns should be not sharper than 45deg.

yes , while a stainless flue would work most of the time, in cold weather the steel would get too cold and when attempting to light the stove you would get negative pressure and it would smoke like a pig indoors.

Its not that we are expert on this - more that we have made all the mistakes along the way !!!

After we chucked our outdoor steel pipe we installed these - they are not expensive here and the chimney goes up very quickly. They must surely be available in the UK ??

Interesting.
We have about 6m of 5" stainless flue, which I ran up our brick chimney, after the first 1m, which is rigid vitreous enamelled steel. To avoid condensation issues (especially when lighting) and deposits of resins (wood burning) I wrapped the stainless flexi flue in glassfibre insulation. Your terracotta blocks look designed to tackle the same issue. A really smart way to build a chimney!

Its possible to buy twin wall flue for outside applications so protecting the inside lining from the worst of the cold.

My mother had a coal fired stove fitted to her narrow boat as it was being built. While it did keep the boat nice and warm during the winter, you had to keep the chimney clear of clinker, there was always ash to empty, and (even though the stove was a good one) she was forever cleaning the boat (as every time you opened the firebox to add fuel smoke and soot would escape and then settle out). Now she has a diesel fired stove and a lot less hassle.

Open flue damper, open door vent and allow to draw for a few secs, then open the door = smoke/dust up the pipe.

There is no free lunch mind. Burners are work and time. You spend most of your days looking for wood and the nights dreaming about it. Price of an install in Jim's modern house, would buy a nice old car. A guy I know built his dream house in Argyll. Right on Loch Awe. Surrounded by forestry.
I dropped in to his house by boat for a coffee and a look over this fab house. No log burners. Didn't want them. "They are all work" he said "and that's what I don't want." I have 2 coal fires in this house and they are only used for novelty.
