Just fixed this problem with my 1996 306 after living with it for a year. Right up under the drivers seat, there is an orange electrical connector going to the seat belt pre-tensioner. I disconnected it, and then reconnected it, making sure it was firmly in place. Problem is now gone.
Can't promise this is whats wrong with yours - the light is indicating there is a fault in the system - somewhere - but that is the most common point.

My wife had this problem for a few days on her Saxo. The cause - her umbrella rolling around under the driver's seat.

Later Cits and Peugeots have had a problem with the connections under the seats. The crimped connections are replaced with soldered ones, and I think a kit is available. Please don't go testing anything though with a mulimeter or a powered test light as the pre-tentioner may go off.<img src=icon_smile_blackeye.gif border=0 align=middle>

I wont go prodding, just in case. When I spoke to our local pug garage they implied the problem may be under the seat as they asked whether it is moved back and forward a lot
