Suspension/steering pressure problem

MMm ok that's a pity, thought I 'd found the culprit. Did give the filters a short visual inspection through the filling cap, lifting the tubes up a bit- looked clear as day. However, maybe i need to take all the tubes out and lift the top off to give it a proper inspection. Loathe to do so because I only refitted them a couple of months ago with great care... oh well

If it's not the filters am i correct in thinking it must be a failing pump? The system failed after alot of raising, dropping etc. Maybe I pushed it to its limit

Once I had the same problem of a stiff steering and car didn't raise, it was after I replaced the hydraulic tank block part #2. After a while I noticed that when the hydraulic cap ( part #5 ) is pressed with a finger all is OK. So I replaced the O-ring part #12 and it sorted the problem.




This may also happen if the crankshaft pulley starts to sleep. The pulley composed of two metal parts that a rubber connects them ( to eliminate engine vibration ). After couple of years the rubber separates from one of the parts and then when the part that is attached to the crankshaft spins the part that the belt is on spins much slower.

That's very interesting. Thanks. Going to take filters out and inspect the tank in general. Don't understand what you were saying about the crankshaft though. Are you referring to the auxiliary drive belt?

It's a dual-mass crankshaft pulley and the rubber "shock absorber" lets go and slips, just like the alternator drivebelt would slip if it were not tensioned enough.

Oddly enough not Jim.

I had a very persistent squeal on mine that the bloke who originally did the oily bits could never cure, sounded like a slipping belt so his remedy was to drown the belt with belt spray which lasted a couple of hours.

Took it to the Polish bloke I now use and he knew what it was as I drove up to his garage.

Alternator clutch/freewheel. Which he fixed easily enough. Unfortunately with being left too long it had taken the dual-mass crankshaft pulley with it - not so cheap.
Still running silently after a couple or three years.

HI Good news!

After taking the whole hydraulic tank out and having a proper look at the filters- just as CitroJim "the oracle" said- black fur coats!

Cleaned them up, but it all back together, and wahey!! It's like driving a new car... so smoooooooth.

There are two filters, one on the return side, and one on the output side that feeds the pump. I'm guessing that if the latter gets really clagged up, because the pump will keep on sucking, it will empty the filter, and start to suck in some air at the top - unless the filter top below the fluid surface level. If air gets sucked up, the ride will suffer.

If the filters were that dirty, what sort of colour was the fluid?

Sounds fine, and like reasonably recent fluid but filters that have done a lot of duty. Mine were black too, although not blocked, until they got renewed a couple of years ago.

Usually they last fine unless some gorilla gets hold of them. They're easy to clean and normally come up well.
