I wish I had remembered you were going to Heathrow, Jim. I would have advised you consider parking in one of the other car parks (such as the one for T3), and then use the Heathrow Express to get to T5. Within the realms of the airport the train is free, and (certainly when I had to visit the airport professionally) T3 carpark charges by the half hour for the first two hours, whereas T5 carpark charges for the first 2 hours, even if you are there for 15 minutes.

To be honest James, and for an easy, stress-free life I really didn't mind paying the T5 cost! I'm sure Sian, exhausted after travelling back from Singapore on a long-haul flight would have been delighted at the thought of then travelling with her bags all the way to T3 via Heathrow Exprerss!!!

I'd have been done for child cruelty

Good thinking for when one has to visit for other reasons though :D

Seemed to be the early afternoon of the early 90s in MK today...

In the space of about ten minutes around 13:30 today I'd seen:

Immaculate L plate Proton MPi 1.5SE.
Equally immaculate L plate Astra GSi 16v...still looks like you need to be wearing a backwards baseball cap to drive it...but definitely a rare car these days!
P plate Mitsubishi Colt.
H plate Ford Orion.
J plate Saab 9000CSE, and then breaking the 90s combo, a very, very early first generation Transit. Didn't see the plate so can't confirm the year.

Not as exotic as some things sure, but all of them surely are pretty rare to see these days.

Well, I spotted this little beauty at Rownhams Services, eastbound, on the M27 this afternoon. The owner (I believe it was a recent purchase) had just picked it up after it had been imported from South Africa.

I have been taking an interest in all things electric recently, but today had the chance to have a little chat with a gentleman who had spent many hours restoring to absolutely pristine original condition something with a straight 6 Internal combustion engine from the early 1960's, an absolute icon.

It was under a red cover in his garage, with to the side, a neat range of those red tool cabinets, which put my own haphazard plastic box arrangement to shame. A chromed wire wheel peeped out from under the cover at the front, and there was the tell tale "bulge" of the bonnet.

As he pulled the cover off....there it was. Definitely "red", a gorgeous shape, and definitely an E-Type Jaguar roadster :-D

..and under the bonnet....the straight 6. Nothing to fear for the competent home mechanic there, no ECU's, everything fixable (if no doubt expensive :)

No pictures, didn't have my camera, but I did feel priviledged to have a peek, and undoubtedy a very valuable beast.

Yes, nice and straightforward and just what I love. As I said in another thread, this headlong drive to make everything as complex and complicated as possible these days is totally abhorrent to me...

The E-Type proves there is no need for it at all...

Mind you, the one I'd love, the V12, is equally straightforward, there's just more of it!

The one I saw was one of the first 500 3.8 Litre, "flat floor" models, which are for some enthusiasts the most collectable/valuable. Back in the early 1960's they would have cost around £1,500 about £31,000 ish in today's money.
Few years ago now, but the sales particulars of this one, Chassis Number 850038 (RHD Roadster no 38) caught my interest as their is a Newcastle link in the story.

It achieved a world record price of £225,000 at the time for an e-type at Bonhams Goodwood Revival Sale on 14th September 2013

I've had the misfortune to have to help work on a V12 E-Type, and can assure you - that while it might not be as complex as a modern car, it's no less difficult to get at *anything*. The general mantra according to the owner was "Step 1. Dismantle the entire car first." It would have been generally easy to work on the engine bay if the entire engine wasn't in the way. Always preferred the soundtrack of the straight six E-Type to be honest. V12 was silky smooth and unnervingly quick even by modern standards, but the angry bark of the straight six suits it better for me...

My spot a couple of days ago was a Dacia 1310. Took me until the second spot to actually work out what the heck it was. I knew it was something Eastern Bloc, from the first time I spotted it...and that I hadn't got the slightest idea what it was. That's something that doesn't happen very often to me! Second time I saw it I was able to spot the Dacia badge on the bonnet, so I was able to poke around on the internet until I found a photo that matched.

I did help Xantia_V6 with a bit of rear suspension work on his V12 E-Type... That was fun... In a good way but yes, I can see access can be a challenge in some quarters but then when you have spent years working on Xantias you get used to it...

Spotted a red Triumph Toledo in the Newport Pagnell BP filling station this afternoon whilst out on my bike... Looked quite tidy too but I did question the wisdom of taking it out on such a salty day... Roads are covered in it at the moment...
