Ride quality...is it my imagination....

Unread post by milleplod »

.....or is the ride quality better when my C5 Exclusive Tourer is loaded up? The reason I ask is that I've just come back from Wickes with 8 x 25kg of ballast in the back.....and the ride seemed much smoother than on the outbound drive. :?

YES it does improve. Try it with 450kg.....soft as a CX :)

Roll bars mate, they have kept making them bigger/stiffer as the C5 developed. I am not sure if they changed the sphere pressures ....

I concur. Smoother drive when loaded.

I have complained to my dealer about the jitteriness of the ride on my X7 when driving unloaded but have got nowhere as it's difficult to demonstrate. Whilst driving through France (three up, fully loaded, with roof box) it was a very comfortable drive.

Ahh...that's nice/reassuring to know! When I first got the C5, I did think it was a bit jiggly, especially on some of the local, poorly repaired roads, but put it down to the 70k miles on the clock.

Thanks for the replies!

Ditto, £100 of shopping at Aldi will do it too.

Most fluid suspension Citroens were/are like this. Two things you can easily do to keep the ride as soft as possible are run on Michelin Energy/Energy Plus tyres, and avoid like the plague any over-inflation, even by a couple of psi. On hydropneumatic suspension, the first line of absorption is the tyres.

Rear spheres are the next target. Although the centre (hydractive) sphere is responsible for providing Soft ride, the corner (wheel) spheres are easily neglected, and when down on gas pressure will harden the ride, even if the centre sphere is ok.

...and of course there are 2 Centre spheres on the X7 rear Chris, so without rear passengers, it can 'jiggle' a bit without a good load.

...forgot that, Marc. Is there no workaround for this?

..Short of stopping every so often to pick up hitchhikers :-D I don't think so Chris. It's another reason why I very often engage sport mode to knock the centre spheres out more often - especially with the winding roads here, as it just throws the front passenger left and right in 'normal' mode. Having the full leather seats too does mean you slide about a bit more than with cloth material that 'grips' you into place. I just have to remember never to dive into the car in a rush, or I end up flying out the passenger door!

I think that most vehicles seem more sturdy and comfortable with full load :) , even a motorbike feels better (not very quick but..)

as for the X7, I only ever drive it empty, and it's horrible ;) will look into it soon

Load up the boot with tonnes of shopping and a full tank and you'll notice the difference John for sure.

but Marc! it should be so much better! reading these replies I wonder if my ride quality issues are felt by others now..

I am going to do a test.. I will put lexia on, and a camera and see what the car is doing whilst driving average roads.. will report back...
