Re: Anyone done the Scotland route 500 on 4 wheels?
A lot more than it was a few years ago. When we first started going up in the '70s there was very little in the way of a rural market, people living in croft cottages built a new house next to them and then let them fall down, we watched quite a number decay from year to year.
We were staying at Bilbster near Wick in those days and although there was some demand for houses in the town rural properties were virtually valueless. It was probably well into the '80s or even '90s before the was a demand for rural property. The first habitable croft cottage we saw for sale was priced at £15,000 but now there are asking £100k+ for a derelict beach cottage such as the one in the picture.
Mind you it was similar down here, we bought a 300 year old stone cottage with fabulous views over the countryside and Lyme Bay with no close neighbours for £5,850 in 1970, its worth a bit more than that now.

Trying to rack up miles on the DS3 to show that it is consuming oil at a more than ideal pace and I was tempted to go run the NC500 again. Chose to go down to oban for a seafood platter instead but I might just have to go back around after seeing your pictures! So beautiful over there.

the road over to Applecross is amazing the gaelic name translates to the pass of cattle. I'm hoping to cycle it soon.

The obvious well known mountain ranges would be the Cuillins but they are jaggy rocky things not much like the pic!
One of the most distinctive mountains in the north is Suilven but not many trees in the surrounding landscape.
You may have to do some pic fixing on the second one, all I have is the thumbnail at the moment.

As requested Neil,
Handa Island near to Scourie
The mountains in my 1st photo are Quinag, Sail Ghorom and Benn Gharbh. Suilven and Cansip are just south of these.
I think they look like the sphinx but a lot older. They are all part of the Geopark which have some of the oldest rocks in the world. If interested a good place to visit are the caves near to Inchnadamph.

I don't know if you have been following the Picture's of the Day thread, but in a bit of a co-incidence the War memorial, in Somerton, Somerset features a soldier in the same reverse arms position as the one from Scourie. There were a range of designs for approriate memorials so maybe not surprising that the two are similar. Main difference is the Scourie Soldier is wearing the kilt and as you might expect is constructed from Granite.

Shaun and I are going to do the NC 500 in the spring. I'll activa it and he will type-r it. I know who will be most relaxed, even pushing on. He says budget for 3 full tanks of fuel, so he ain't intending hanging about. Will the activa keep up with the type-r? He says no chance but I think that will only be because my nerve won't hold as much as his!

I see you can buy the NC500 as a kind of package holiday now...
You're right Davie, it's a no-brainer who'll be most relaxed doing it. It's just what the Activa was made for
