If you like old bikes look for the S O S, I knew this guy back in the day in fact I bought my first socket set off him when I left school.

Cowey's also produced a few innovative cars, pre 1914, including the use of air suspension. Cowey's car-making did not resume post 1918.

Found a few references on the Motorsport magazine web site which has interesting access to its archive of articles.

This is a bit of correspondence related to the Cowey car and the workshops location.

I have reached my limit of 10 articles for the month, so get that message with the link. Hopefully the link goes straight to the article for other first-time users.

That was a quick bit of editing elma :!:

Came across a nice website for old signs Petra's 1930-1965 Roads and Road Signs Included a nice image of Castle Street Ford, Carisbrooke, Newport Isle of Wight.

Here's a geograph view, but the old signs have gone.

http://s0.geograph.org.uk/geophotos/02/ ... 248f8d.jpg

On the subject of Fords/watersplashes they always make a nice backdrop for a classic car/motorcycle picture, and as you might expect there is a website devoted to the ford/watersplash http://www.wetroads.co.uk/map.htm

Click on a County/click on a ford :!:

Just proves there's a website devoted to every subject on the planet ;)

I was a little surprised (but happy) to find a website devoted entirely to the vintage wireless I'm currently restoring; the one made by a company named after a lighthouse...

There's something for you to dig out Neil, I know you will ;)

Are any of the Buckinghamshire fords familiar Jim? I know the Dagenham fords don't appeal too much!

first one up on the list is down Watery Lane!

Ah Jim, its going to by Eddystone surely, but perhaps via the 70's "pop" group Edison Lighthouse (who can forget "Love Grows (where my Rosemary goes)"......yes 99.9% of the population of planet earth I know!

That's unless there is a radio company called Longships, Longstone, or Lizard :-D

Now this is a very pretty looking thing, and being a Somerset man you should know exactly where it is!

Yes, I know those Buckinghamshire fords well Neil ;)

I also know some very good 'intermittent' ones that more than occasionally wreak havoc on the way to work - our office sits in a dip and can be approached from three directions along minor roads but every one is prone to flooding during heavy rain... Invariably one or two who have no idea of fording get stranded and cut us off for a while...

I love fording on my bike too..

I know that lighthouse very well... It's at Burnham On Sea :D One of two in fact, there's a high level one too...

Dad was in hospital with a former Burnham lighthouse keeper earlier in the year...

Pretty sure I have driven (or been driven) through there; looks like it might be a challenge these days though!

There is another one not far from there, Clatterford Shute:

My Dad's Dyane died in that one - there is a bit of lip where the kerb is at the end of the tarmac, and as we went down and compressed the front suspension the fan caught the water and blew it all over the engine. On Dyanes/2CVs the plug leads curve round from the coil to the cylinders and can touch the inner wings. The water was enough to earth the leads and splutter cough stop was the result! Drove it out on the starter, dried the leads out, and away we went! Must have been 1986/7 as we were going to sort some stone out for the extension which was built in '87.

EDIT: Yes, spot-on Neil, Eddystone it is... Fascinating story surrounds the Eddystone Lighthouses, of which the current one is the third...

Eddystone the communications company (or Stratton and Co.) have an interesting history too. They originally made pins...

A bit how Peugeot started off making bikes and coffee mills. Cars came much later...

With such a company name they specialised mainly in marine communications equipment but our outfit also used some of their receivers in the 60s and 70s and I spent some of my early years servicing them...

This is similar to the wireless I'm currently restoring - The one shown is a later model, mine's a very early one dating from 1958... Older than me - just..

Well I wasn't expecting that as the song goes! I just thought Eddystone was close enough "Edison" thinking your wireless would be something out of the Thomas Edison stable. Strange co-incidence as well that the pop group decided to call themselves Edison Lighthouse. Never thought that there would be an Eddystone brand.

Inspired by the Fords pictures I have been looking for the ford I almost lost my motorbike to (BSA 250) in 51 years ago.
It is at the bottom of a very steep and winding hill road that claims a lot of cars and buses. Somewhere near Goathland/Glaisdal.
Haven't been there in ages and couldn't locate it, will have to have a look in person.

That's impressive IOW knowledge Richard....my only experience was a bus day trip when we had a holiday in Bournemouth. I don't think local highways authorities are that keen on fords...one of the best across the River Wear up at Stanhope County Durham, and backdrop to many a Beamish Reliability Run and LE JOG reliability Trial is no longer in use. Public Enquiry came down on the side of closure on the basis that a vehicle needed rescuing about once every four months. Happens regularly on the Holy Island Causeway still, latest a couple of weeks ago.

Lived there from when I was 3 (early '78) to when I went to Uni in Sep '93. My Parents continued to live there until 2001. Amusingly you can now rent our house as a holiday cottage: Sheepwash Cottage

The kitchen looks to be the same one we put in in 1984!! Down the photos you will see a telephone box - IIRC this is a George 5th (or perhaps 6th I can't remember now!) box, which is quote unusual; however just in front of it, there is a VR post box - one of only a handful left. Clearly visible on street view: here. Perhaps a new spotting opportunity!!

Hmm, given the posts on this forum, perhaps VR boxes not so rare! Maybe it was just one of a few on the IOW.

http://www.redphonebox.info/history.html It does have a section on police boxes, AA Boxes, Rac boxes etc
