I take it you did try turning the steering wheel a tad (to take the load off the steering lock) while trying the key? Of course you did.

Yes indeed I did. I tried flippin' everything, including judicious use of a hammer

I've seen the same happen to an ignition barrel on a Pug 405. Had to remove it and hot-wire before the car could be driven home!

nice to hear of another 405 D owner. Hope it goes well.
My fella will defo have an ignition too and also I believe that any period Pug diesel (not petrol) ignition barrel 'll fit. A few years back I successfully put a 505D barrel in a Mk1 106D
