They're very hard to get set up correctly. I had a ride in one years ago and there was a slight jolt on gear change. But probably no more than the current electronic ones.

OK, how about a long wheel base H Van with properly configured Activa suspension, and a nice, powerful V6 HDi engine (preferably 3.0l, but as they are not common a 2.7HDi engine might do). It would be set up for travelling, with comfortable sleeping arrangements and proper cooking facilities (yes, Jim, you could borrow it, when my cousin Bob has given it back!).

Sounds almost perfect James :D

Except for one tiny detail... Swap the engine for a petrol 3.0 V6 and then it really will be perfect ;)

While I would prefer the V6 to be petrol, the weight of a long wheel base H Van suggests it would need the torque of a diesel engine.

A petrol V6 is not short of torque James...

If it could handle it well I would go for a nice ES9J series engine, with a strong (so, ML5T or better) gearbox. It would have to be mounted in a mid position, as I don't think it could fit (with all the necessary ancillary equipment) in the normal H Van engine bay, but that engine bay could then double up as the table/double bed unit support.

That's a good idea James and on cold winter nights the engine there will keep us warm!

If the engine is mounted pointing fore/aft (as opposed to transverse) it might even be possible to make it four wheel drive (which could further improve the handling, and surprise some hot hatches in the cornering).

The engine covers must be very strong (to bear weight), but also easy to take down, to allow good clean access to the engine (my Mum built her engine cover in her narrow boat with the same requirements), and a couple of access covers for the various check points (oil dipstick and so on). The H Van true engine bay would have all the coolers mounted, as well as the batteries (multiple batteries, as on a boat) and the ECUs.

I'd go for a nice comfy car and a nice comfy hotel room, can't be assed with all that finding a caravan park and carrying water hassle. :-D

Funnily enough, yes!

Davie, I noticed on the C4 Bookface forum that the owner of your old one is now thinking of selling. Again.
